Summer 2009 Pants and Capris

ABB
This summer we will see some fashion trends stay with us and some new ones come about. Some of these are easily worn by many of all ages, and others are left to younger people. Still others are best left to those who like to take risks with their fashion.

Wide-leg trousers are once again popular this summer. They are both easy to wear and easy to find. These pants are fitted in the waist and flow beautifully to the floor. Satin is a popular fabric for them this year. Wide-leg trousers can make your legs look much longer too and don't over-emphasize any one part of your leg. To find a great pair, go to Ralph Lauren or, if you're on a tighter budget, Kohls has a great selection too.

Harem pants are a new-comer that were all over the runways for Spring/Summer 2009. These pants are similar to the ones that were popular in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Think about the type of pants that M.C. Hammer used to wear. These are not for the faint-hearted to try! The true fashionista can appreciate them. They are fitted at the waist and upper calf, and then very baggy throughout the seat and thighs. If you're looking for Harem pants and you're on a budget, try Forever 21.

As for denim, the boyfriend jean is once again in style, as is "pegging" or rolling them up. This style was also popular 20 years ago or so. These jeans are relaxed through the hip and thigh and look best with a more fitted top. Find some at Calvin Klein.

To contrast with the above styles, capris are taking on more of a cropped pants tone this year. Instead of the mid-calf, they are cut just above the ankle. Also, they are close fitting, as opposed to the gaucho pants that were so popular a few years ago. Ralph Lauren once again has many offerings of this type of pant. Old Navy has some slim stretch capris for those on a budget.

The humble straight-leg or bootcut jeans and pants are still going to be universally flattering on most women, and therefore, still popular. They are also widely available. Look for a pair that fits well, not too tightly, or else you'll just look like a sausage. Straight-leg will be straight down to the ankle and boot cut will have a slight flair at the bottom. Don't confuse boot-cut jeans with the flared jeans that have a much wider opening at the hem. A boot-cut jean will have a hem that is slightly larger around than the part of the pant that goes around the knee. The GAP has great options for both.

Have fun trying on and seeing what types of pants work for you! Don't be afraid to step outside of your box and see if the wide-leg trousers or the boyfriend jean looks good on you. Fashion should be fun, not a chore.
