Summer 2010: Makeup

Alexis Valentine
Summer makeup is all about calling forth your inner goddess, whether she be gold, bronze or innocently dewy. The makeup trend for summer 2010 is no different, but it's more subtle and natural. No more being overly bronzed and tanned, and more splashes of vibrant color. Before you start pulling out your bronzers, you need to be aware that your summer makeup shouldn't be the same as the makeup you wear the rest of the year. Summer makeup needs to be different because it needs to be able to handle the heat, sweat and any water activities you plan on doing. I've put together a little guide on how to wear and apply summer makeup, as well as tips and tricks to wearing makeup around water.

Lets start with the summer 2010 makeup trends and how to wear it. It's all about gold, bronze, dewy skin and colorful nails, but keep it as simple and natural as possible. Summer is the season to show off your tan, and a healthy, glowing skin should speak for itself, there's no need to cover it up with a ton of makeup. Summer is definitely not the time to be wearing a lot of makeup either, because the more you have on the more obvious it will look when you're perspiring. Can someone say hot mess? What I would recommend is skipping everything and just apply a tinted moisturizer with a high SPF, Smashbox's High Beam along the brow bone and cheekbones for highlighting, a sweep of bronzer just under the cheekbones, and a colored lip balm with an SPF.

For those who would like to wear makeup, go light and choose makeup with an SPF. You can never have enough skin protection. I'd stick to light cover up and translucent powder for the face, a peachy gold blush, something warm to add a pop of color, and a lip gloss or peach colored lips. Stay away from heavy foundation, lip liners, dark lips and eyes.

Now for the beach and poolside makeup tips, always go with waterproof and keep it natural. There are many waterproof makeup out there, the really good ones are pricey but worth the investment if you plan on spending a lot of time around water. Vibrant, fun nail colors are in so go crazy, but keep the nails neat and trimmed. Definitely use a primer to help your makeup last longer, and find one that has an SPF like Hourglass' Veil Mineral Primer. Eye makeup should be natural, stick to neutral and earth tones. If you want to add a pop of color to your eyes try doing it with colorful, waterproof eyeliners like Hard Candy's Walk the Line. If you want to wear mascara look for something that is truly waterproof like Tarte's Four Day Stay Lash Stain. Finish off the look with dewy pink or strawberry stained lips, either with a lip gloss or lip balm. I'd recommend a lip balm with an SPF.

In the end, nothing is more beautiful on a woman in the summer than a healthy skin, so always remember to protect it. I can not say it enough, there's no such thing as too much skin protection, especially during the summer. So when you're out stocking up on summer skin care and makeup supplies remember to look for products with an SPF, products that contains as much natural ingredients as possible, and don't forget to accessorize with a hat and sunglasses, just another way to look fabulous while protecting your beautiful skin.
