Summer 2011 Outdoor Movies in Nashville

Outdoor movie events and venues are generally fun family entertainment. Often the kids can roam around and play at least a little bit, moms can pack their own food and beverages, and the whole family can have good quality time. Outdoor movies are more like watching a video together at home than in a dark crowded theater, with the added benefit of fresh air and a larger screen.

Movies in the Park celebrates its 16th year in 2011. Every Wednesday night in June at the Centennial Park bandshell, starting on June 1 with the final showing on June 29, there will be a free movie rated from PG to PG-13. There will be food and drinks for sale on site from a variety of restaurants and vendors, or families may just bring their own food from home. Activities at the bandshell will begin at 5pm with games and prizes. The actual movie itself will begin at sundown, approximately 8pm.

Just about 30 minutes south of Nashville in Leipers Fork, they have Lawn Chair Theater Kid's Movie Night. These free movie events take place on the 2nd and 4th Fridays every month from May to August. For information on the movie titles and times, contact them by phone or email, listed on the link above.

If you have teenagers, you might want to try something like the Second Saturday Outdoor Cinema event, which takes place at the Belcourt Theater from June through September. This is not an event for younger kids as the movies feature more adult themes. The movie is free, but you should bring your own seating. It is unclear whether attendees may bring their own refreshments, so parents might want to contact the theater before attending. The events start at sundown with vintage reels of commercials, previews or short films.

If you are having a kids' party or family friendly block party this summer, why not throw your own outdoor movie event? FunFlicks Outdoor Movies will create a backyard movie theater for you with an inflatable screen. Prices start at $300 for a basic set-up, where they provide everything except the movie itself, and for $50 more you can have a popcorn machine to serve your guests. It isn't cheap, but if you have enough people and the parents all go in together, it could be a unique and fun experience for the whole family that should create lasting memories.
