It is impossible to keep a child occupied continually throughout the day. However, there are many activities that children can enjoy on their own.
Coloring, workbooks, cutting/pasting projects
Puzzles, board games
Video games, computer games
Treasure Hunt
All children love an adventure. Planning a treasure hunt can keep your little ones occupied during those tough summer months. Take the time to put a lot of thought into this project, it can also be fun for the parent!
Create a map. Put yourself in your child's position. You know her/his likes/dislikes, incorporate that into the map. Do not make the map too hard. Keep the game easy but fun.
Put careful thought into your treasure. You can make the treasure another type of game. For instance, reward your child with a new board game, new puzzle, new book, etc. The treasure hunt not only provides a good release of energy, but it can also lead to a well deserved prize.
Games with clues are also fun!
Water Activities
The sun can take a toll on our little ones. Before beginning any kind of water activity outside, make sure you provide your child with adequate sunscreen. Water safety is important. Small children should not be left alone. Do not leave any children around water if there is a chance of drowning.
Pools, sprinklers, slip n slide
If you do not have any water equipment, make your own! Have fun with the kids and join them. A regular garden hose does wonders!
Water guns are a safe alternative for children to play with on their own.
Rainy days provide a quick release of energy for kids. Once the rain clears, let your children enjoy splashes in the puddles. Mud is a great substance for children to play with.
Friends
Most children miss their friends during the summer. Arrange play dates so that your child can have some social time. Parents can take turns so that everyone can get a break. Take the kids to a water park, theater, or bowling.
Pets
Pets are loving and affectionate. They can seem just like humans. Children love animals. Often, pets become best friends. If all else fails, giving your child a pet will surely bring many days of enjoyment! Pets love children. Kids and pets go hand in hand!
Summer can be a difficult time for parents if kids are left with nothing to do. There are many simple solutions to this problem. A child's imagination is a wonderful thing. Let them help you come up with an activity. Not only does this stimulate their minds, it makes them feel involved. Kids enjoy things much better when they know they helped to plan the event!
