Get a Job
Getting a summer job is a practical way to teach teens the value of money and education. It gives them an appreciation of the hard work we as parents do to provide the luxuries that they seem to believe are entitlements. Jobs may include, lifeguarding, swim instructor, babysitting and or retail stores. Many academic and sports camps look for teens to act as coaches or coucelors. It helps develop good work ethics and teach responsibility. If you are a financial savvy parent, have your child put fifty percent of their earnings away in a Roth IRA. It will help teach them to secure away for their retirement at an early age which can only become the best habit they can ever have.
Volunteer
Most teens are old enough to volunteer time at the local hospital or library. Volunteering at different organizations help teens identify their likes and dislikes at an early age. The better they know themselves, the better career choices they will make. Without exposure, teens often turn into college students without a clear focus and this can lead to confusion and chaos typically in the first years of college. Volunteering time is a beautiful form of philanthropy and it is rewarding in itself.
Summer Internships
Parents check with your company's human resource division to see f you have a summer internship program. If you do not, ask your friends. It looks great on college applications and it is as close to the real thing as a teen is going to get. They learn the art of networking and receive an opportunity to display their talents.
Sports Clinics
If your teen is extremely interested in sports then consider sending them to a sports clinic which will help them enhance their skills for the beginning of the school year. If they have some friends that they share sports activities with during the school year, then you can arrange for them to attend together. If they are doing things they enjoy with the people they like to associate with, they are sure to have a good time.
Teens are finicky individuals and consider the summer months as opportunities to help them blossom into wonderful, responsible adults. Any of the above activities will assist you in doing so.
