Summer Activities in Yosemite

Yosemite is one of the most beautiful locations in the world, and is even lovelier in summer. There are a wealth of activities for you to enjoy as an individual, couple, or family in Yosemite during the summer months.

Nature owns Yosemite, so most of the activities are necessarily outdoors. But whether you're staying a week or just out for the day, there are a number of ways to enjoy Yosemite's tremendous beauty actively in the summertime.

These activities include hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, rafting, swimming, bicycling and horseback riding. There are others, but these are some of the more popular activities available to visitors at Yosemite throughout the summer months.

Rock Climbing

Yosemite and Rock Climbing have a rich history. Yosemite's Camp 4, now on the National Register of Historic places, is home to the legendary climb El Capitan. El Capitan (The Captain) is arguably one of the most important peaks in the history of rock climbing in the world, toping out at 3,300 feet.

Climbers hailing from all areas of the globe come to Yosemite to rock climb, and you can see them during all of Yosemite's snow-less months. In addition to other climbing areas less difficult than El Capitan, there are also Bouldering areas. Classes are offered during the seasonal months so if you've ever wanted to try climbing, do it while you're here.

Hiking

Hiking at Yosemite is one of the most popular activities during the summer. Over 700 miles of trails are available to hikers visiting Yosemite. The levels of difficulty vary from demanding hikes up several mountains and several day backpacking trips, to easy leisurely walks and light hiking.

Backpacking

One of the greatest things Yosemite is known for is its myriad trails, easy and difficult, and this makes it a mecca for backpackers. The pristine beauty of Yosemite and raw wilderness is the ultimate combination for both avid and beginning backpackers. However, there are some stipulations. You need to acquire a wilderness permit and bear-resistant food storage before you begin.

Swimming

You can swim in both public and hotel-owned heated pools, and during the summer you can also take a dip in Yosemite's Merced River. Any other time of the year this river is too cold, but during the summer, and especially mid-summer, it becomes warm enough to swim.

Rafting

Rafting is generally available only more towards mid-summer at Yosemite because of how cold it is at all other times. There are is awesome scenery and numerous places to rent rafting and kayaking equipment. It can be an awesome experience, and guides are available for instruction or river trips.

Horseback Riding

Horseback riding is another popular activity at Yosemite during the summer months. In the summer, stables open and guided rides are available. Outside companies and individuals also bring horses into the park, as you can if you have them, but there are certain requirements you'll have to get, including a wilderness license, before you can ride them into the park itself.
