Summer Babywearing Guide: Keeping You & Your Baby Cool

Paige Turner
Summer can be a hot and sticky time. That doesn't mean you have to banish your baby to a stroller if you really want to wear him or her. There are lightweight, breathable and even some water friendly carriers that will make you and your baby comfortable and close.

Solarveil and solarweave are breathable mesh fabrics that dry quickly and actually blocks some UV rays. They is a popular choice in ring slings, mei tais and pouches used at the pool or on the beach.

Ring slings are a great choice if you need an adjustable sling. Ring slings are appropriate for young infants all the way up to toddlers. The tail is helpful to shade baby from the bright sunlight or to cover up while nursing. Zolowear makes a solarveil ring sling. As you can see on their website, their slings come in 4 different colors with a total of 5 designs to choose from.

If you are a little intimidated by a sling but still need something adjustable a mei tai might be just right for you. They are also appropriate for newborns through toddler hood. Since it is tied on, it can easily be used by mom or dad. Sachi makes a wonderful summer mei tai out of solarweave. They are padded for extra comfort to wearer and baby. The Sachi Mei Tais even come with a hood to protect your little one's head. They are available in six stunning colors.

If you are a fan of a pouch, fear not. Kangaroo Korner (http://www.kangarookorner.com/c-29-water-slings.aspx) makes both a solarveil pouch and a mesh pool pouch. Unlike other pouches such as Hotslings the Kangaroo Korner pouch is adjustable with a series of snaps. Pouches generally use less fabric so they are cooler and more comfortable.

A wrap is the most versatile option for baby wearing, but having several layers of fabric can get hot and sweaty. The Gypsy Mama Water Wrap is a great alternative if you love wraps and swimming. They are made from a sports knit so they dry quickly. They even have UV protection woven right in! According to the website this wrap is appropriate for newborns through preschoolers.

If you are willing to give up the UV protection that solarveil and solarweave offer there is one more summer option in wraps. Fortunately there are gauze wraps like the Gypsy Mama Bali Baby Breeze. Gauze wraps generally aren't appropriate for swimming but they are light and breathable for everyday wearing. Gauze wraps are available in many beautiful colors and patterns.

If you are more of a do-it-yourself person, there is an option to make your own summer baby carriers. Solarveil is available through co-ops online. You can get gauze fabric at your local fabric store. For instructions on making carriers please visit the Mamatoto Project or Jan Andrea's Baby Crafting page.
