Summer Camps for Kids in Eastern Kentucky

Shelia West
Summer is a special time for children. They're free from the restrictions of school. They envision days of sleeping late, playing all day, and staying up late. They look forward to their summer vacation with excitement and anticipation. They're out of school, full of energy, and yes, usually bored after a couple of weeks. Parents know this all too well. That's why many parents start checking out summer camps even before school goes out for the summer break.

Summer camps are a great way to give your child, and you, a break during the summer vacation. Camps provide a place where your child can go and spend time with other kids their own age. They get to do fun things in a fun environment without their parents. It could be a day camp, where parents drop off the kids in the morning and pick them up each evening. Or, it could be a camp where they actually stay for several days and nights. Camps like these are usually found in most areas. Would you like to know about two such summer camps in Eastern Kentucky that your kids might be interested in attending?

The first camp is a really cool day camp which is held at the East Kentucky Science Center and Planetarium. This center is located on the campus of the Big Sandy Community and Technical College in Prestonsburg, Kentucky. The camps run from nine in the morning until three in the afternoon. Lunch is provided for the campers. This year there will be camps in June and July. The camps are for two different age groups. Younger children in the five to nine year old group have a one day camp. Camp for the older kids, ages ten through fourteen, is a two day camp.

The prices for the camps are thirty dollars for the one day camp and fifty dollars for the two day camp.

The Science Center has some really fun activities lined up for the kids to do. And since the activities are different, your kids could attend both camps. However, there is a limited number of campers for each camp. Only twenty kids per camp will be accepted. So if think your kids would find this camp fun and interesting, contact Shannon Arts at 606 889-4700 to find out more information or to get the registration form.

Now, if your kids really need a break from you, they might want to attend the 4-H camp this year. We've all heard of 4-H. It's been around 4-ever, it seems. The Club was actually started to help educate youth on new ideas and technology for agriculture. This year, the Floyd County 4-H Program, is offering a camp for students in grades four through eight. This camp is an away from home camp. The kids will actually be traveling to a camp located in London, Kentucky. The camp is scheduled for July 26 through July 29.

Nature is the main theme of this camp. There will be all types of fun activities, such as swimming, fishing, archery, and dancing. The kids will get to relax out by a campfire after a fun day with kids their own age.

This camp costs $120 which covers all their food while at the camp as well as the activities. To get more information about this great summer camp, you can contact Heather Nelson who is a Cooperative Extension Agent for the 4-H Youth Development Program located in Prestonsburg, Kentucky. You can reach her at 606 886-2668 or even email her at hnelson@uky.edu.

Summer camps can be fun and exciting for your kids. Once they've tried one, they will probably want to attend the others. Check out these camps and also check with your schools for other summer camps in the area.

Oh, by the way, do you know what 4-H stands for?
