Summer in the City

Chicago for Free!

It is no secret that Chicago is one of the most beloved cities in the country. Chicago natives and tourists alike flock to the city throughout the year to enjoy its unique landscape, food, music, festivals, and festivities. While it can be argued that the winter holiday season in Chicago is the best and most beautiful time to visit, the city undoubtedly comes alive in the summer. While driving down Michigan Avenue, you are sure to experience a summer sensory overload. Tanned beach bodies, a warm soft breeze, plenty of hot dog carts, and multiple outdoor concerts are just some of the signs that summer has arrived in the city. And the best part? You can have an amazingly memorable summer day while keeping that hard-earned cash in your wallet. From swimming to relaxing in the park, there is no other city that can rival Chicago's summertime charm.

On a sunny day, there is nothing better than taking a walk in the park. Chicago is known for their beautiful parks which are meticulously tended to. The most impressive park is Millennium Park. Of course, there is no admission fee. This 24.5 -acre park focuses on art, music, and architecture. There are various free programs and concerts held at Millennium Park throughout the summer, and even if there is nothing planned on a given day, it is well worth it to take a stroll through the acres of gorgeous gardens and greenery.

Another cost-free Chicago favorite is the Lincoln Park Zoo. It boasts an extensive collection of hundreds of species of animals. The layout of the zoo itself is very easy to follow, and the animal habitats are very impressive. A new interactive exhibit, the Nature Boardwalk, is set to be unveiled soon, which will open up acres of natural wetlands and vegetation. The Lincoln Park Zoo is open seven days a week.

Lake Michigan is perhaps the best free resource that Chicago visitors can take advantage of. It boasts miles of free public beaches, many of which are equipped with volleyball nets, restrooms, and snack stands and/or casual beach-front eateries. There are also bike and running paths along the lake which provide a beautiful view of the Chicago skyline as well. The beach is a great place to swim, have a picnic, or fit in some physical activity.

One of the most popular events to attend is the Chicago Air and Water Show. Every year, over two million spectators gather along the shores of Lake Michigan to take in the sights of high-flying jets, fighter planes, helicopters, parachute teams, jet-skiers, and various other air and watercraft. You may have to be patient and arrive very early to claim your spot, but this show is well worth it. If you prefer to not deal with a large crowd and do not mind watching a "less polished" version of the show, it is helpful to note that many of the show's participants rehearse their routines a day before the official start of the event (usually in mid-to-late August).

After a busy day in the city, the perfect end to your summer night is a visit to Navy Pier. You can explore the pier (and perhaps grab a drink) before casting your gaze on the famous Navy Pier fireworks display. The fireworks never fail to impress, and they go perfectly with the illuminated city skyline. The fireworks, which are synchronized to various soundtracks, can be viewed on Wednesdays at 9:30pm and Saturdays at 10:15pm throughout the summer.

There is clearly an abundance of activities that the city of Chicago has to offer throughout the care-free summer months. So head out with your friends or family and your shades, because summer in the city is even better when you don't have to spend a dime!
