Summer Clearance Sales: What Should You Buy?

When to Stock Up and when to Pass Up

Summer is winding down, and with that comes many a clearance sale. It is tempting to buy everything you see because it is on deep discount, but the money you save can be quickly eaten up buying clearance items you will never use or need. Here are some smart tips on steals and deals, and what products you should probably give amiss until next season.

Smart to Stock Up

Bathing suits: These are one of the best items to stock up on during deep summer clearance sales. Get one or two sizes up for the kids, and one or two for yourself. You can save a lot of money just buying swimsuits when retailers are trying to unload them.

Seasonal haircare and skincare: If you plan to use them throughout the year, these can be as much as 90% off at the summer's end. Shampoos with scents like "Summer Paradise" and self-tanners are items stores want to get rid of to make room for fall and holiday product.

Camping gear: but only if you are going to use it. Don't buy anything just because it is on sale. However, if your family does a lot of camping or grilling, it may be time to upgrade your tent or replenish your propane or grilling supplies.

Sunglasses, tank tops, and flip flops: All seasonal clothing will be on sale but you aren't going to need shorts in the middle of winter unless you are going on vacation. You can wear a sweater over a tank top, and sunglasses are a necessity all year long. Flip flops can be used in the shower at the gym, or to wear home from your pedicure throughout the year.

Towels: Beach towels are sometimes up to 90% off during this end of summer clearance sales. They are not just for the beach, you know. They make luxurious bath towels. To get a more polished look, go for beach towels in more muted designs.

Kid's fun: Take care though, to get things they can use throughout the year, even in cold weather -- such as sidewalk chalk or bubbles.

Smart To Pass Up

Sunscreen: The only caveat being sunscreen for the face. You need to protect the skin on your face all year long, even if your body is protected by Winter clothing. Avoid though, stocking up on lots of sunscreen as the SPF degenerates over time and may not be as powerful next summer. However, if you plan on going on a cruise or winter vacation to a warm place, feel free to stock up on a couple of bottles.

Pool Toys: These are inexpensive enough that they don't justify having to be stored all year long. Pass on the floats and beach balls until the Spring sales.

Kid's Stuff: Much of the kids' Summer stuff isn't too much fun indoors or in cold weather. Pass on it unless you choose carefully and find an extraordinary once in a lifetime deal.

Too Many Summer Clothes: Only choose a few pieces that will be stylish next season, are at least 50% off, and can be worn in winter paired with other things. Some people like to buy entire wardrobes a year ahead, but for people with small spaces or who don't like a lot of clutter, this simply isn't practical.

End of Summer sales can be treasure troves for savvy shoppers looking for good deals. If you do find a deal you can't pass up, at Target for example, who are known for their 90% off clearance, it may be worth it to go to a few others in the area to stock up. However, beware of buying things simply because they are so deeply discounted. Shop smart, and you will make out like a bandit at all the clearance sales!
