Summer Dos: Kickin' it Old School with Barbecues

Rebecca Peterson
Trips across oceans and even those in various parts of the United States have always appealed to me. When it comes to my favorite summertime activity, however, it usually involves an "old school" pastime: barbecues.

The summer generally brings bright skies and hazy, humid weather that conjures up a certain type of nostalgia. Going to barbecues at a friend's house or having one at my own is an ideal summertime activity. Why? Consider these reasons:

1. Grilled food tastes better. Once that hot dog or burger hits your lips, you can't imagine a boiled or pan-fried equivalent. Chicken, steak, and vegetables all have distinct flavors that seem to intensify and flourish when grilled.

2. The "reunion feel." It's typically difficult to see all of your friends and family during the summer, especially if everyone lives in different places. Barbecues possess that unique ability to provide a gathering-ground to unite your loved ones. My family coordinates a reunion every other year around the same time, which is generally hosted around the country. If you want your barbecue to become an annual or bi-annual occasion, then keeping a set time each year will give your guests plenty of notice in addition to great memories.

3. Pool possibilities. Don't forget that barbecues often involve pools, rivers, or lakes, and, where there is water, there is bound to be fun. If allowed, a lake could open the door for jet skiing and a pool could lead to in-pool basketball - a definite favorite of mine.

4. Sports and games galore. Whether you're playing or even watching baseball, sports can add that extra hint of fun to your barbecue. In my family we'd play horseshoes, baseball, bocce, cards, and even video games if we had to be indoors.

5. Summer romance. There is something about barbecues that make it this neutral, seemingly innocuous environment. It inspires a sense of youthfulness at any age and you can find yourself getting carried away with the wind in the trees or the rain that you actually welcome on a hot day. A BBQ can create the perfect setting for forming new friendships, pursuing a crush, or even falling in love.

In retrospect, places that I have traveled to involved creating the barbecue experience in some form or fashion. While abroad and in different cities, I felt most at home when eating and talking with local residents. I believe that I will always appreciate barbecues and feel that there could be something for everyone in this favorite summertime activity.
