Before you hit the beach or pool, it is vital to follow proper sun and safety rules for summertime fun. Below are some great tips to keep everyone safe.
Sun Safety Tips
*Always apply sunscreen 20 minutes before sun exposure to allow for product to absorb effectively.
*Reapply sunscreen every 80 minutes if they have gotten hot or sweaty.
*Avoid prolonged exposure during the sun's peak hours of 10-2.
*Keep well-hydrated. Drink plenty of water, juices, and sports drinks while in the outdoors. Avoid sodas, some contain caffeine, which can be dehydrating. And large amounts of caffeine may cause the body to lose calcium and potassium, causing sore muscles and delayed recovery times after exercise.
*Wear a hat and sunglasses while out in the sun. Make sure your sunglasses offer full UVA/UVB protection. This includes kids and adults alike.
*Make sure you have a shaded area for your family to rest in (a canopy, an umbrella, etc).
Water Safety Tips
*NEVER leave a child unattended in a pool, even a small one. A child can easily drown in just a few inches of water.
*When boating or on the water make sure all children are wearing a life vest.
*Always observe any signs or flags on your beach. If they are advising you not to swim (rip currents, jellyfish, sharks, etc), DON'T!
*Around a home pool, make sure safety gates are latched properly at all times. Do not allow children to play near a pool area, and install a safety alarm if possible.
While you can't plan for everything, having a well-stocked diaper bag, cute kids, and great attitude will make things run a little bit smoother. Your toddler and entire family are sure to enjoy this summer season. So break out the flip-flops, light up the grill, and get out the camera, cause you're definitely gonna need it. Have a safe and happy summer!
