Summer Family Bonding Activities

Ruth Carter
With the busy pace of modern day society, parents and children are usually rushing to work, school, sporting events, church or civic events, and other social engagements. The summer season is a wonderful time of year for families to take time out from their busy schedules and spend quality time together. Family members can take part in a number of summer activities that help to strengthen the family bond as well as provide some relaxation from the hectic schedule of life.

Walking

Family members can take walks together during the cooler parts of the day and discuss the current events taking place within their lives. Even if it is simply a walk around the neighborhood, parents and children can enjoy some quality time together as well as get in a little needed exercise.

If everyone in the family is in good physical condition and is up for the challenge, hiking can be another wonderful bonding activity. Many hiking trails provide scenic views as well as unforgettable glances of wildlife.

Bicycling

Whether members of the family are casual, around-the-block bike riders or seasoned, long-distance cyclists, a leisurely bike ride together can provide a setting for family members to take pleasure in each other's company. Also, as with walking, bicycling helps enable parents and children to receive exercise that they need in order to stay healthy.

Having a family picnic

Family members can go to a local park and enjoy a picnic together. Parents and children can pack healthy food and drink choices that everyone likes and sit and relax together on a blanket or within a picnic shelter if there is one available. This casual setting will allow family members to have time to talk with and listen to one another as well as be able to relieve some stress from the hurried pace of life.

Bowling

If the temperatures do not allow for outdoor activities, bowling can be a fabulous indoor activity for a family to do together. Depending on the preferences of the family members, parents and children can play a friendly or competitive game. For those families (like this author's) who are trying to watch their spending, check out www.kidsbowlfree.com where children can bowl two free games daily for the summer season and parents can purchase a discounted bowling pass for up to four adult family members.

Playing board games or card games

Another wonderful indoor activity that families can do together is playing board games or card games. With a wide variety of board games and card games available for purchase, families can choose games that best fit the ages and abilities of the family members. Some of this author's family's favorite board games are Life, Candyland, Trouble, The Patriot Game, and Chinese Checkers, and their favorite card games are Uno and Go Fish.

Family members can also design their own board or card games. This bonding endeavor enables each family member to contribute his or her own creativity to the finished product.

Spending time together as a family is an important part of maintaining a healthy family unit. This summer, take a break from the wild race of life and enjoy some family bonding.
