Summer Fashion Must-Haves: Sprucing Up Your Wardrobe

1- Sunglasses

Sunglasses not only protect your eyes from sun damage, they prevent wrinkles by keeping you from squinting. Invest in a versatile pair of sunglasses which will block both UVA and UVB rays. Try them on in a mirror to ensure that they'll suit your face shape. Black and brown frames will give you the most mileage. While white or colored frames may be trendy, they won't easily coordinate with the rest of your wardrobe. Stick with black or brown if you're looking for versatility.

Consider purchasing an inexpensive, hard eyeglass case. A case will keep your sunglasses from scratching while inside your purse or while stored. I still have a pair of $5 sunglasses I purchased four years ago because I was careful about storage. You may also consider an eyeglass repair kit. For just a few dollars, you can repair your glasses even if you've lost a screw. Check your local drug store.

2- Sandals

I don't know about you but nothing keeps me cooler than having bare feet. Feet have a lot of sweat glands so don't stifle them in warm weather. Flip-flops are cheap and there's a good chance you've got a few pairs in a few different colors but they're not the wisest choice for your feet. Your feet need support and there are very few flip-flip brands which offer arch support (Rainbow brand is one of them). Consider choosing a pair of flat sandals instead of flip-flops. They'll look more sophisticated and will offer you more comfort. Up to a 1" heel will give your feet good support and really spruce up your outfit. A flesh-toned color will go with everything and elongate your legs, making them look thinner.

3- Versatile Dress

During the hot weather, a dress is comfortable, cool and sophisticated. I recommend knee-length cuts in cotton fabrics. Cotton breathes and will absorb sweat. An A-line skirt will cover your body without hugging it. Opt for dresses with wider (at least 1") straps which will make your arms look slimmer. If you're looking to get a lot of mileage out of one dress, stick to solid and versatile colors such as earth tones or black. A simple dress can easily be dressed up or down. It can take you from day to night or through an entire weekend getaway with the correct accessories.

4- Shawl

Shawls are excellent wardrobe investments because they can be worn as scarves during the winter or light scarves during the summer. A shawl can easily tie onto your tote bag and used once the temperature drops. Theaters, restaurants, public transportation and office buildings are often too cold for my taste. During the warm summer months, a light shawl will ensure that you'll be comfortable in a range of temperatures. It's a beautiful accessory as well. Have fun with your shawl. Choose a bright color or a bold pattern to add interest to your wardrobe or choose a muted, solid color for more versatility.

5- Tote

It's hot out so you'll be wise to carry around a small bottle of water in order to stay hydrated. If you've invested in a nice shawl, you'll want a good-sized tote to carry it around. Tote bags will never go out of style. Trendy styles include lots of pockets and bold hardware but timeless pieces balance simplicity and interest. Good style is a very personal endeavor. Choose a style that you love and will make you feel good. Some women prefer to have many inexpensive totes while others would prefer to splurge on one timeless piece. The choice is yours.

6- White Blazer

A tailored blazer is not only a timeless fashion piece but an instant slimmer as well. Summer is all about white and no matter what your size or budget, a white blazer can spruce up your wardrobe. It can be worn with jeans, skirts, dresses, capris, shorts, the list goes on. And, as I mentioned before, you never know when you'll find yourself in an arctic air-conditioned climate so plan wisely.

7- Convertible Bra

Summer fashion includes halter, spaghetti strap, strapless and racerback cuts. A flesh-toned convertible bra can be worn with any and all possible cuts. Don't let your bra wardrobe keep you from buying a top that you love. Investing in a convertible bra with good support will keep you from embarrassing bra slips and bulges. Try it on before you make your purchase. Make sure that it will be tight enough to be worn without straps yet loose enough that it doesn't give you back rolls. High-end lingerie stores will offer free bra sizing. Visit one to ensure you are shopping for the correct size and purchase a bra in a store that suits your budget.

8- Hair Accessories

A simple claw-clip or package of hair bands can save any bad hair day. When it's hot and humid, it's best to keep your hair up and off your shoulders if it's long. A pony-tail, bun or twist can keep frizzy hair at bay. If you've got short hair, opt for a headband or scarf worn as a headband. Headbands are all the rage this summer. Spruce up a simple outfit with a printed or textured headband.
