Basic Must Haves for Summer and Transitional Seasons

Lisa White ISSA & AFPA CPT
With the styles on the market catered to the ultra skinny, the realization is the average American woman is a size fourteen. With that in mind, finding clothing styles to fit may not seem as simple as you'd think; especially after looking at hundreds of skinny jeans, uber short-shorts and way-too-tight shirts. Regardless of what's in style at the moment, there are certain basic summer items that are essential for your wardrobe. Although these styles are not flashy, they are adaptable and easy to accessorize so dressing them up for different occasions is possible. Not only are they great for summer but these items are transitional pieces for those days the weather fluctuates.Check out these summer essentials.

Shorts

There are many short styles available but there are some pieces that are better for curvier women. Bermudas are a good alternative for hot-pants but be sure to try them on first. This style often falls just above the knee and can make curvier women look cut off and "dumpy." If Bermuda's are hitting you in the wrong spot search for a pair of shorts that are three or four inches above the knees. It will lengthen the look of your legs, as well as, keep your thighs from rubbing.

Wide Strap Tank Tops

This summer essential is simple and can be worn by fuller figured women even if some don't think it is a good clothing item. The wider straps will help to cover wider bra straps and it's a great top for the transitional months with blazers or underneath velour and french terry zip jackets. Bolder colors are popular for the summer but don't forget to purchase an essential black and white tank.

Basic T-shirt

The basic tee doesn't mean the plain cotton boring t-shirt you may think. Many of the t-shirts can now be found with cotton/spandex blends making the shirts hold its shape better. Look for percentages in the 94% cotton and 6% spandex and up range. When purchasing your basic t-shirt pay attention to the details and watch the sleeve length and the body shape. Sometimes the body shape is fitted and it may not be as comfortable as a straight bodied t-shirt. As for the sleeve length try to avoid cap sleeves since it hits the arm at the largest point while 3/4 sleeve shirts can smooth your upper arms.

Cotton Dress

Dress choices for the season are coming in every style and color. Cotton is breathable and washable which makes it a good alternative to heavier fabrics like matte jersey. Wrap dresses and belted dresses fit well over a full figure and doesn't give you the maternity look like an empire waist dress. Shirt dresses are also a good option. The addition of your own belt, if it doesn't already have one, can also create the illusion of a smaller waistline.

I like the belt tip. That's a good one for anyone looking to define or accentuate their waist.
