Summer Festivals in Rhode Island

The Revolutionary War and gorgeous beachfront venues, what more could you possibly want out of summer celebrations? You can get both of those things and much more at festivals in Rhode Island. Expect to find history and unique musical events during the summer festival season.

There is nothing quite like celebrating the fine art of arson. At Gaspee Days in Warwick, going on from May 3^rd to June 10^th, join in on the celebration. In honor of Rhode Island settlers who set fire to the British schooner, the HMS Gaspee during the Revolution, the Gaspee Days bring history to life with reenactments, and a parade that features colonial militias, as well as fife and drum corps. The Newport Yachting Center plays host to the Snapple Sunset Music Festival, taking place this year from June 28^th through July 8^th. With a waterfront tent that offers views of the ocean, who needs performances by the likes of The Temptations, Ben Folds, or Howie Day? Brought to the city by The Providence Black Repertory Company and The City of Providence Department of Art, Culture, and Tourism, Sound Session offers a block party concert at Waterplace Park, plus hip-hop, jazz, house and afro beat musicians, and spoken word artists. Events take place at Xxodus Café, the Black Repertory Theatre, and additional venues around Providence. St. Mary's Feast is held in Cranston, Rhode Island, from July 18 - 22, 2007. This festival, which honors Veterans of Foreign Wars, includes a Veterans Parade and live entertainment by Stefano Ray. Carnival games and rides flow down Atwells Avenue and Knight Street during the event.

Ninjas, Taiko drumming, origami, and all things Japanese are on tap for the Black Ships Festival in downtown Newport, going on July 19 - 22 this year. In honor of Commodore Matthew Perry, this event brings a little Japan to this little state.
