Crayons and coloring books all worn out and the backyard is quickly losing its appeal? While summertime in the suburbs is a fun and restful time of the year for children, it can become repetitive and sometimes even downright boring. Luckily for those living in Bergen County, New Jersey, there are some fun activities waiting to break up the week of swimming and channel surfing.

Most living in Bergen County have heard of Van Saun Park and the Bergen County Zoological Park. But no matter how many times you may have visited here, there is always something new to see and always fun to be had. Van Saun Park located in Paramus, features 6 picnic areas, pony rides, a carousel, playgrounds and much more. The most popular feature of Van Saun Park is the Bergen County Zoological Park where monkeys and prairie dogs reside year round. There is a train ride that runs throughout the zoo, a butterfly exhibit, farm animals, and even mountain lions! With wide pathways running throughout, the trails lead you from the ordinary to the exotic, over streams and under shady trees. Come any day of the week to picnic in the parks, play on the playground or meet all of the animals at the beautifully maintained zoo.

For those looking for a more basic experience with nature, the Ramapo Reservation located in Mahwah is perfect for a day of hiking or picnicking. With 2,145 acres of beautiful landscape to explore, any child will find something they love here. Trails range from an easy stroll around a large lake, to more intense mountain trails. The Ramapo River runs throughout the reservation and there are beautiful waterfalls tucked along pathways. Parking is free and the family dog is allowed too!

The New Jersey Children's Museum in Paramus is a great outing for toddlers through kindergarten aged children. Offering exhibits that are fun and educational, the museum is great for a rainy day visit in the summer or even for summer birthday parties. With exhibits like a T.V. studio, a child sized grocery store, a play hospital and a dinosaur cave; there is truly something for every child! There are always new and exciting upcoming events, so check often for the theme that interests your child the most.

If you can't make it to the shore and the kids are desperate for some water and shore play, Darlington County Park may be the perfect solution. Located in beautiful and scenic Mahwah, the sandy shores and clean lakes are perfect for splashing and swimming. Also featured at the park are pavilions for picnicking and basketball and tennis courts for a little variety. But nothing beats a nice cool swim on a sweltering summer day. Park fees are quite low for both adults and children. Perfect for a day at the beach, without the beach!

Keeping the kids occupied for the summer can become a chore, but don't let it. Be creative, look local and you can turn almost anything into fun!
