Summer Fun Scrapbook for Kids

No Rules Just Memories

Jaipi Sixbear
The scrapbook trend sweeping the nation has taken all the fun out of scrapbooks. It seems such a shame that kids have to follow all the die hard scrapbook rules just to put together a scrapbook of summer fun to share with friends and family.

We seem to have forgotten what making a scrapbook is all about. Is it really necessary for kids to worry about acid free and perfect borders? Of course not! Let kids go crazy creating their own work of art this summer. What kind of fun is it with a parent standing over your shoulder reciting every scrapbook rule there is?

Summer Fun Scrapbook for Kids - The Pictures
Those pictures have been sitting in that box for years. Wouldn't it be nice to let them serve a useful purpose? Better yet, buy a cheap camera for kids. They can use their own pictures as they please. So what if it turns yellow in a hundred years? Who cares? It's a picture, not a person! Letting kids have and record some summer fun in a scrapbook is invaluable!

Summer Fun Scrapbook for Kids - The Glue
Did you know that plain old white glue is acid free? White glue is cheap and washable too! Kids don't need fancy glue to make their scrapbook. Who cares if things get a bit bumpy? This is a kids summer fun scrapbook, not an artistic masterpiece. Lighten up and let kids get messy with white glue. It dries clear. Plus it's wicked fun to peel off your fingers.

Summer Fun Scrapbook for Kids - The Paper
Most construction paper is now acid free. What? That's right you are buying quarter per sheet paper for nothing. Kids don't need fancy scrapbook paper. Let them use their summer fun imagination for a change. Creating their own theme is rewarding too. At 2.99 for 500 sheets, it doesn't even matter if they scribble and start over. Perfect is in the eye of the beholder.

Summer Fun Scrapbook for Kids - Frames
Kids learn important hand to eye coordination by cutting their own frames. Just trace around the picture and use scissors to make the outside shape of the frame. Glue the picture to the traced outline and it's done. No worries about being uneven. No cutting out the center. No rules. Just kids using creative skills to create a summer fun book of memories.

Summer Fun Scrapbook for Kids - Stickers and Embellishments
Most stickers are cheap and acid free so don't fuss. Let kids pick them out and use them as they wish. Embellishment don't have to be themed and expensive either. An embellishment can be anything from a button to a third place ribbon. Let kids spread some glue around and sprinkle on sand or glitter. Kids should be allowed to experiment with different items as embellishments. Hands on work is a great teacher.

It IS fun to peel dried glue off your fingers! I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. Great ideas, Jaepi!

I agree so much. I love photo albums and the trend to turn every photo into a breath taking piece of art that costs an average of 3.00 is loony! and a terrible use of resources. Good article

good article, we should just allow our kids to be creative in their own way, not all this politically correstness that is creeping into everything we do. How are kids to learn their own way otherwise?

Linda's cracking me up! Jaipai, this is such a good suggestion. I know my granddaughter would enjoy such a project. But she'd probably want to put a little poem w/ each picture. That could be awesome, too, now that I think abt it. You are so wise to point out not to pressure kids into our image of perfection. Trial & error is part of learning. And w/ kids' art, it's counter-productive to make it all abt a specific outcome. It's for creative fun, for crying out loud! Good article.
