Summer Fun in Syracuse for Free!

Liz McD
My fellow Syracuse residents, let's be honest with ourselves: sometimes, this town can seem pretty dull. Those of us who transplanted from major cities might feel a little lost when it comes to having fun in upstate New York. But don't worry! This summer, there are some awesome, fun, and FREE events that we can all enjoy.

The Farmer's Market

There are a few markets in Syracuse, but the biggest and best is found just down the street from Carousel Center at 2100 Park Street, I-81 exit 23. You can't miss the lineup of big green pavilion buildings. It's open year-round on Saturdays from 7am to 2pm, but May through mid-November, you can also hit the market on Tuesday from 4pm-8pm and Thursday from 10am-5pm. It also transforms into a flea market on Sundays, year round, from 7 to 3.

Looking around the market is free, of course, and if you ask nicely, many vendors will happily let you try samples of their wares - anything from homemade fudge to dips to some of the best fruits, vegetables, and baked goods you'll ever taste. But if you bring a few dollars and keep grocery store prices in mind, you can end up saving tons of money on your food bill. Just remember to do a full walk around the produce area before you make any final decisions; prices can vary widely from booth to booth.

When: May-Nov, Tues 4pm-8pm Thu 10am-5pm Sat (year-round) 7am-2pm

Taste of Syracuse

Located in Downtown Syracuse "in and around Clinton Square," Taste of Syracuse is easily found: just look for pavilions and groups of people gathering. This year, June 5th and 6th will see local businesses coming out in droves to represent themselves amongst the booths. You can get all sorts of free gifts and entertainment. And if you do choose to spend a little dough, local restaurants will be offering samples of at least one menu item for $1 each. Main stage entertainment this year includes The Reissues, Under the Gun, and Square Pegs.

There is also a marketplace featuring Greek products, crafts, and food for those who have some cash to burn.
