Summer Getaway: Elk Mountain Ranch in Buena Vista, Colorado

Since 1985, Elk Mountain Ranch has been the home of the Murphy family. The ranch gives you a vacation with the best of Colorado at reasonable rates. Activities available are horseback riding, hiking, fishing, and white water rafting to mention a few things. All this set against the background of the Rocky Mountains.

Elk Mountain Ranch is a perfect place for families, couples, or small groups. The ranch can accommodate up to 30 guests. The intimate atmosphere though allows activities to meet each guest's needs and desires.

At a 9,600 feet elevation, the view is one of a kind. Elk Mountain Ranch overlooks the Arkansas Valley allowing spectacular scenery of the Collegiate Peaks. The small town of Buena Vista is considered the "White Water Capital of Colorado."

If you are a nature lover or photographer, this is the place for you. The wildlife includes deer, elk, antelope, and occasional brown bear. The San Isabel National Forest surrounds the ranch. The lodge is located near Little Bull Creek with aspen and evergreens surrounding it.

Elk Mountain Ranch is just a few hours from both the Denver and Colorado Springs Airports. It is just far enough away to allow you to soak in all the atmosphere of the Rocky Mountains. Temperatures during the summer are pleasant enough to take nice hikes in the mountains.

The main lodge houses the dining area, a lodge room with a large fireplace. There is also a piano available and a library stocked with great reading material. The lodge also has an enclosed porch and sun decks.

Meals at Elk Mountain Ranch are superb. They meet even the meticulous eater. If you are on a special diet just notify the staff before arrival and the meals will be provided. Meals range from trail ride cookouts to candlelight dinners.

Horseback riding is available on daily trail rides. All horses at matched to the riders skilled by experienced wranglers. Rides are kept small and led by experienced riders. Ride options include lunch on the trail, a champagne brunch ride, and an overnight pack trip.

White water rafting is available on the nearby Arkansas River. Instructors are experienced and professional. You are provided life vests and fully equipped white water raft. Wetsuits are also available upon request.

Hiking is another great activity at Elk Mountain Ranch. The area is rich in Ute Indian and Mining history. Arrowheads are often found on hikes in the nearby historic Indian Battlegrounds just a short distance from the ranch.
