Summer Hair Care for Children

Jane Vee
How do you care for children's hair in the summer? The sun and the pool cause damage that shampoo does not always help. Do you have to leave your children inside without any summer fun just to keep their hair nice? Here are a few tips on caring for your kids' hair in the summer.

In the summer, children's hair dries out and gets brittle. Their hair needs to be revitalized from the pool and the sun. Conditioner is a great way to help your child's hair. Johnson's makes a spray-in conditioner that you leave in your child's hair. When washing your child's hair use children shampoo with conditioner. If you cannot find a shampoo and conditioner together, buy separate conditioner to put into your child's hair after washing.

Most children love to get in the pool during the summer. This causes damage to the child's hair. Before the child goes into the pool, wet the child's hair. The hair will absorb the fresh water instead of the chemical water. Wetting the hair will help you keep your child's hair healthy.

After your child gets out of the pool, rinse the chemicals out of his or her hair. Wash your child's hair as soon as possible using shampoo and conditioner. Keeping your child's hair clean keeps your child's hair healthy.

Most hair barrettes and pony tail holders pull and tear your child's hair. If your child is going to wear her hair up use pony tail hair clips that are all plastic. Pony tail holders that are stretchable catch the hair and pull it, usually causing split ends. If you have to use stretchable hair pieces like scrunchies, wrap the hair with tissue or toilet paper where the hair piece will be. This way the hair will not get caught and damaged.

During summer months children's hair should be protected from the sun. Wearing a hat will help your child's head and hair stay healthy. There is nothing better than shade from the damaging sun. Protecting your head from the sun is important. If your child has really short hair and the scalp shows, be sure to use sunscreen on your child's head. For longer hair use sun block that can be used in the hair. Parts can have sunscreen applied directly to them. Nioxin Scalp Guard Sunblock is one of the sunscreens that can be purchased. You can go to beauty supply stores for more brands.

I used my child's sunscreen on her part. It did initially get in the hair and make the hair look wet. The good news is it worked. Her head did not get burned. She has dark hair and I used a SPF of 40. The wet look went away with a few combings. Her hair felt softer too.

Take care of your children's hair in the summer to keep their hair damage free. Spray in hair conditioner is best friend to your child's hair. Keeping hair clean and conditioned will help alleviate damage and split ends. Make summer friendly for their hair.
