Summer Hair Care Made Simple

Looking forward to summer? Most of us are, with the exception to our hair care. The truth is that our hair is absolutely ravished by the sun, surf, and sand. Summer is naturally more drying to the hair. When the humidity is really high, even the best tamed mane can suffer from the frizz and pool parties wreak havoc on hair color, especially for those of us of who color or perm. Don't let this stop you from living it up this summer though. There are plenty things that you can do to keep your hair looking great and healthy.

The most important part of your hair care during this time of the year is to moisturize. Dry hair not only becomes brittle, but split ends will start to surface. There are many types of moisturizer out there, the key is finding something that works well with your hair texture. Curly hair, natural or processed, colored hair (especially bleached), typically need more moisture. I recommend Kemi Oyl, a lightweight moisturizer found in salons that carry ethnic products. However, it is great for all hair types. It only takes a small amount, the size of a dime or smaller. You want to start at the tips and continue to the roots. Not only is it lightweight but it adds amazing shine and helps make hair more manageable. Summer time is also the best time to use the specialty hair care products on the market that are specifically tailored to suit processed hair.

It's no secret that the chlorine found in pools can ruin your hair color. But, did you know that going to the beach is just as harmful? The sea salt is just as damaging as chlorine. The good news is that there are ways to protect your hair. We've all heard the stories about going from blond to green, but chlorine alters the color of those of us with dark hair too. One step that you can take is to try some of the shampoos available for this. Most contain the same ingredients and can be found at your local Wal-Mart or drugstore. Also, read the box carefully when buying hair dyes. Some specifically state on the label to steer clear of chlorine water. Although I have yet to try them, there are some hair dyes targeted to this problem. The affects of salt and chlorine are still damaging though, so I do suggest that no matter what you decide where the color is concerned to wash your hair after taking a dip.

Prevention is also key in maintaining healthy hair. Don't go overboard with hair care products containing a lot of alcohol such as some hair sprays and gels. A good alternative is always the pony tail or simple up sweep, both can be worn in a variety of styles and is easy to take care of. Another good tip is to minimize heat styling and to keep in mind that less is more. Summer hair care can be made simple.
