Summer Is Hear and Pools Can Be Dangerous - Pool Safety Guide

Pool Safety

Jay Safford
For those of us that have a pool, it is one of our responsibilities to keep our pool safe to prevent any accidental drownings this Summer. If you do not have a pool and like to visit a friends or a local community pool then you are responsible for those persons under your care. If I were you don't depend on someone else to keep your kids safe.

You will hear it in the news this Summer over and over again about how a child has drowned from lack of supervision or someone left a gate open and a child got in the pool and drowned. These incidents could all be prevented if the pool owners all took a look at the safety gates and pool alarms for good operating order and fix all problems now, not whenever you get to it.

I went to a pool party this weekend, well really I went to three different ones and one was my own. I watch like a hawk at any problems and I see allot of parents not even keeping and eye on the pool much less their kids! i like to get those parents attention when their kid does something that they should see so maybe the parent will get the hit to watch all the time. My niece has a new baby boy only ten months old and he can crawl supper fast, you should of seen this kid go, well we put him down on the pool deck and yep you guested it he crawled straight for the pool! No, he didn't make it in! We were just testing to see if he would go for the pool and this shows that at this age they have no fear of water and will go straight for it. You need to know another thing is when a kid is drowning you do not hear a sound. They just slip under silent as a mouse.

I know that I see most older pools do not have a pool fence and I would recommend that if you have a pool to get one installed and it will give you piece of mind when away and maybe your lawn maintenance man left the gate open when you are away on a trip or at work. Those alarms work great if you are home, but the fence will stop kids from getting in all together. I would check to see if your fence is not torn or in disrepair for the kid that may want to go for a dip and not realize what they are doing and cannot swim.

You will be seeing alot of commericals now that it is summer time about pool safety and we all need to look at it from a childs point of view and see if they would be able to get in. This past holiday weekend i went to three different pool parties and at each of them we set up a chair next to the pools with an umbrella and an adult was sitting there at all times and we took turns playing lifeguard to keep our kids safe. You know that at parties you could get distracted from our children and with this setup we took alot of worry out of the picture. Don't get me wrong I still keep an eye on my kids, but not everybody does and that is why we all have to keep an eye on all of them even if we do not have any kids to worry about. You would not want a tragic drowing since it would ruin the party!

Keep the Summer safe and Happy so we do not have to hear of any more of those tragic drownings. Remember a safe pool is a happy Pool.

It is hard to imagine anything quite as tragic as parents sitting by the bedside of a comatose near drowning victim who was once their joyful and joy filled youngster! This one should be required reading for all people - parenmts in particular- with swimming pools. Thanks.
