Summer Hobbies that Are Sure to Keep You Entertained

Alex Parks
Do you find yourself spending the majority of your day looking forward to watching reruns of Seinfeld? Are you experimenting with mind altering drugs on a regular basis because you think that there is absolutely nothing else to do? If you can relate to either of these questions, chances are that you are bored out of your mind and need to find a few new summer hobbies! Growing up in a small town, I have had a great deal of experience with learning how to stay entertained during the summer without having to constantly stupefy myself with drugs and alcohol : ) Listed below are a few of my absolute favorite summer hobbies, all of which will go a long way towards helping you have a more entertaining summer.
  1. Games, games, and more games!
In my town there seems to be a belief shared by many that after a certain age a person is too old to play "games" (except beer pong/beiruit that is : ) Such a belief is simply false. On the contrary, finding a game that you and your friends enjoy may be one of the best things that could happen to your summer. I highly recommend trying to brainstorm some of the games you liked to play with your friends as a child/young adolescent, and think about whether such a game would still be entertaining. For example, in the area where I live there are now regular games of capture the flag and manhunt at the rec park. Also, if you or any of your friends happen to already have a ping pong table, pool table, or fooseball table take advantage! Try having a ping pong party on a Wednesday night! One of the great things about finding a game that you and your friends love to play is that you don't have to wait until the weekend to play. Instead, the game can be a fun activity that you look forward to while you're at your summer job.
  1. Instruments
It is never too late to learn how to play an instrument! For the last month I have had quite a bit of free time, and have spent some of it learning how to play piano! Learning how to play a new instrument, or getting better at an instrument that you already know how to play is a wonderful summer hobby for a number of reasons. Firstly, this is something that you can do by yourself when you have free time but no one to hang out with. Secondly, playing an instrument is a hobby that you will be able to continue throughout your life. Finally, if you're a college student and decide to learn how to play guitar, bass, or piano, you can impress all of your friends when you return to university : ) As far as which instrument to learn I highly recommend the three I mentioned in the previous sentence. You can purchase any of the three quite cheaply and they are all portable, so you can bring your instrument wherever you happen to be going this summer.
  1. Writing
I know, this one probably sounds too much like school, and none of us really want to be doing "school work" when we're on holiday. However, as I have discovered this summer, writing for pleasure can be quite a bit of fun! If you've never tried writing for pleasure I suggest giving it a shot! Just pick a topic that interests you, or maybe something that you've been thinking about a lot lately and see if you can write a page about it. You may be pleasantly surprised at just how much fun you have. In addition, if you sign up with sites like associated content there is a good chance that you'll be able to make a bit of money while writing about things that genuinely interests you.
