Summer Holiday with a Theme and Purpose, Part 4

Practical Ideas that Won't Break the Bank

Lee Hansen
For your listening pleasure, let me now introduce you to yet another fun thing to do with your children during the summer months. Children can sometimes have a vivid imagination. Take advantage of it while traveling on wild adventures that may never be possible to go to in person.

Theme: Listening to Audio Books

How to Start

This is very simple to do, especially if you have a library card. As a family decide what book or books that you want to cover. Make sure every child's needs are taken into consideration. If you have access to the Internet, visit the website of your local library. Not only will you see a vast listing of books, but here is where you can also see the books that are on CD or cassette tapes. Once you have an idea what you want either reserve online or go in person.

Duration of Activity

That will heavily be dictated by the length of the book and also the interest of the child or children involved. If interested in listening to a lengthy book, designate about 45 minutes. To create a sense of curiosity and anticipation turn the book CD off at an exciting part and tell them you'll continue the next day. No doubt you'll be greeted with a chorus of "I want to hear what happens". That's a good thing. It could be an indication that they are really enjoying the book that is being listened to.

Q & A Time

After each listening session ask if they have questions or let them make their opinions known about the book. You will get an idea if they comprehend the story being told.

Conclusion

This would be a particularly good activity when the temperatures are scorching hot or even on a rain-filled day.

Don't be surprised if they want to do this again. And if the child is older or more mature they might want to listen to one on their own. But don't let this be utilized as a substitute for reading. Use it as an enhancement instead.

I hope you and your family have a great audio listening pleasure-filled event.

I need to look into audio books myself. I have a long commute to work. I enjoyed listening to audio books and following along in the picture books as a child before I could read. It would be fun to hear those old books again.

The only time I listened to an audio book was back in grade school.
