The first idea is for preschoolers. Since many preschoolers tend to learn through play, you will find it very easy to entertain and educate them. Start by getting some finger paint. You will also want to create some large size letter stencils for tracing. You can easily make these by getting a few large pieces of cardboard. You will also need some construction paper to cover the cardboard. Use a permanent mark to write the letter that you want to work with. I have found it best to start with the beginning of the alphabet and work your way on down. You can also go with numbers as well. Write the letter on the cardboard and then cut the letter out. Once the letter is all cut out you can have your child glue the construction paper onto the cut out. Make sure that you cut the construction paper to match the size of the cutout. Once you are done gluing the letters you are ready to use them. This particular project is best done outside with newspaper spread out. You can next have your child take the letter and use the finger paints to trace them onto large size drawing paper. Drawing paper can be purchased in large size notebooks usually at your local Target and Wal-Mart store.
For older children you will want some ideas that will be more challenging. You can have them create their own board game using some of the topics that they have covered during the school year. I have also found it to be a lot of fun to have kids come up with their own creative games. By taking the time to allow children to still use their imagination you are still allowing them to think for themselves. This is a very important part of learning for children. Why not sit down with your kids and have them write up a few fun games that they can create this summer. If you make your list at the start of the summer, you will be able to get to all of the items that are of interest to your child.
