Summer jobs provide a teen not only with money, but a look into what they may want as a career. Choosing a profession can be extremely difficult, but a summer job may be just what a teen needs to help them decide.

~Behind the Job Description

So the paragraph the guidance counselor shows your teen may look great. Professionals in the field are in high demand and the pay is incredible. But what is the job really like? Teens can work a summer job or internship in the field to see what the job is all about. Is it a wonderful as the description made it sound?

Sometimes a job description barely scratches the surface to the day to day routines and responsibilities involved. Seeing the actual job instead of a paragraph can make all the difference when a teen is deciding on their future profession.

~Experience

Working a summer job gives a teen valuable experience. As they gain experience, they may decide this is what they truly want to do on a larger scale. This experience will help them land a career in the field much easier. Plus, with experience, teens have a much better idea of the real world and can make better decisions about their future careers.

~How Others Feel

When a teen is trying to decide on a profession, speaking with others in the field provides valuable insight into the ins and outs of the job. Other professionals can explain the different careers in the field to help a teen narrow down their interests to a certain area. Teens that work summer jobs related to their interests will be able to network with other professionals to learn more about the field and hear exactly how they feel about their jobs.

People working in the field will more honest about all the gritty details of the job. Representatives are often sent to schools to persuade teens to join their company or field of interest. These representatives only want to talk about how wonderful the field or profession is. Having a chance to work with those already in the field will create a more realistic picture of the job.

~What Do I Want

Even if their summer job doesn't show them the exact profession they want, it can help a teen realize what they don't want to do. This helps narrow their decision down at least a little.

Even if a teen doesn't love their summer job, or decides they really aren't all that interested in the field, they may find they enjoy certain aspects of the job. This can lead them to another profession they had never before considered.

Summer jobs are a great resource for teens trying to decide on a profession. They can learn more about their interests, gain valuable work experience, talk to others, and possibly even discover professions they had never thought of. Regardless of what profession they choose, a teen's decision is made easier by working summer jobs.
