The very first thing you should do is talk to your parents about the idea of you getting a summer job. You should do this because if you end up getting a job you'll need their help, most likey. They can help you figure out ways to get to and from your job. This could be in different ways; it would include getting rides from them, other family members or even helping you figure out the bus schedule or providing you with your own car. After you and your parents have decided if it's a good idea for you to get a job, you might want to ask them to help you find a summer job. Is their place of employment hiring for the summer? Do any of their friends work somewhere that is hiring?
Knowing someone that already works where you are applying can be especially helpful. They can talk to the manager and serve as a good reference for you. Places are more likely to hire someone they've heard about from a solid employee than just a person walking in off the street. So talk to your friends and family and see if they could be of assistance.
A few other places you should look are online at Craigslist, which will have jobs that are available in your area or on company websites of companies in your area. You should also look at the classified ads in your local newspaper and if you can find any summer employment that way. If you live in a larger city or town, there may be job fairs at your high school or in your city/town. If you don't have any luck with these options in the next few paragraphs you will find some places that usually hire summer help.
Rural areas that have agricultural are good place to find jobs in the summer. Most farms and places that grow summer fruits and vegetables could use help. At these places you will be doing hard, manual labor so it is not for everyone. Look for places that grow fruits, vegetables and other crops. You could easily get a job picking crops. Another great place to look would be a greenhouse.
Landscaping companies also hire more help in the summer since they have more work to do. This would be a good job if you like being outside and doing yard work. If you aren't experienced in mowing lawns or doing gardening work this may not be a good job for you. Some places will be willing to train you and others won't be. Also companies that work with pools, such as installation and maintenance also hire more help during the summer.
If you like to be outside a good job for teenagers is lifeguarding. You need to get a certification for this but there is not a better type of job. You can be outside by the pool or beach. Also you could look for a job at golf course or country clubs. These places are generally open primarily during the summer and need lots of different employees for different needs.
Your village or city also hires more people in the summer. They hire people to work on the roads, landscaping, and also recreation department. You should go to your village, town or city hall and inquire about different jobs available. Once you've had a job with them one summer, it's much easier to get one the next summer if you're a good employee.
Do you like to be around people most of the time and have a lot of interaction with them? If this answer is yes then working at a summer camp might be a good choice for you. They hire kitchen help, maintenance help, and consolers. There are different kinds of camps too. You could work at a day camp, sports camp or church camp. This would give you a chance to experience something new and touch other people's lives. It would be much more exciting than most other jobs. Another type of job that would require a lot of people interaction would be working in an ice cream parlor or seasonal restruarnt. You could have interaction with customers and you're co-workers.
If you prefer being inside is much more appealing to you then check out local schools, such as a high school or college. Some high schools hire summer cleaning help and this could be a good full-time job. Colleges also hire a variety of summer help. Sometimes in offices, dining halls or cleaning. If you're interested in this than you should go to these places and ask questions. After you decide what a good place or places to apply would be you have to start out the application process. When go to these places to either fill out an application or to see if they are hiring you should dress nicely and not have a sloppy appearance. Also make sure you have all the information you will need to fill out your application, even bring a resume with you. One main thing you should have is a list of references and you should have their names, address, phone number, how long you've known them and their relation to you. Once you fill out your application ask to speak to a manager and introduce yourself to them and tell them you would really like to work for them. You should be prepared for an interview. Dress professionally and have answers to basic interview questions prepared. These are just some basic tips on how to land a job.
