Summer, Kids and the Internet - Managing Your Children on the Web This Summer

We know that almost every great invention known to us have been used for the wrong reason, and the internet is no exception. But there are some great things parents and kids can do with their computer on the internet while school is on holidays this summer. In doing so, we can remind ourselves that the World Wide Web has the most convenient public database of resources, knowledge and opinions in our lifetime and history. But because not all information is correct, parents will need to exercise their discretion and protect their children from some of the harmful information.

It is not a wise parent who will discourage their children from using the computer, especially now that they have more spare time to learn more. It is a fact that in America, for example, and in other developed nations, kids must know how to use the computer and the internet as part of their educational development. Poorer parents who do not have a computer at home, will need to encourage their kids to use the public library so they can keep-up with others while still enjoying their summer fun. So do not keep them away from this crucial aspect of their development.

Parents themselves can use the internet as an educational asset to help enhance their children's educational upgrading this summer. With a little research, they can find hundreds of great educational website that will help with reading, spelling, science and others this summer. Their kids will be at an advantage to learn more of what they could not while regular school was in session and so be at an advanced stage when the new school term starts. This will promote their ability to excel beyond the average (or move above the low) grade point in their learning stage.

More time for queries to be answered by parents is possible. Because kids will most likely be on the internet during the day when some parents maybe at work, more questions will arise to be answered by the parents. But if parents arrange with their kids to surf or check-out websites together, they will be able to learn together, share information and experience, and answer their children questions. Often times, especially for the very young kids, this helps to keep them away from certain cultures and lifestyles on the web that can be harmful to them and the family atmosphere at home, and even in their normal everyday lives.

Following on from the above, parents need to be acutely aware of the fact that there are computer software and devices that can be used to protect or prevent kids from checking out the wrong things online, often in the absence of the parent. This is not only a major and serious concern for religious parents who constantly want to protect their children from other religions, for example, but for the regular parent who have their kids welfare at heart. Computer software that block access to adult websites, for example, as well as some social sites, and those promoting violence, are in abundance in America. Parents and guardians need to be vigilant and make sure these are in place and working consistently and correctly. Those who have the computer for their children at home (or who will shortly do so) cannot ignore this need. The summer is long and many kids like to do their own kind of investigations, often into the dangerous websites.

General offline discussions about the internet also helps. Sometime a child may have seen something unpleasant or disturbing online, but declined to initiate a discussion or mention it to their parent. If parents practice and develop a daily habit of talking about what was checked-out on the internet with kids, this may just bring-up the unpleasant issue that was suppressed or declined to be mention by the children. Here encouragement is essential to get children talking about how they feel about what they saw, read or were told. Parents will then be able to decide on what is the best way to deal with a specific known issue.

There are endless dimensions or ways a parent and guardian can encourage their kids to use the internet this summer. Proper control and supervision are crucial. But since we know how beneficial the internet can be for children and parents alike, we are admonished not to ignore its importance in the real beneficial development of children in today's very modern and complex societies.
