Summer Lunch Program Helps Reduce Hunger for Many Students

Partnering Together for a Good Cause

Lee Hansen

Believe it or not hunger is something that many students deal with on a regular basis. The assumption that everyone eats every day is wrong. In the land of plenty, America is challenged in finding ways to eliminate this problem completely.

Raytown churches have teamed up to provide lunch for students in the Raytown School District.

WHAT: Summer Lunch Ministry

SPONSORED BY: local churches

FOR: Students who might ordinarily receive free and reduced lunch services during the school year

BEGINS: July 5, 2011 (Tuesday)

ENDS: August 12, 2011 (Friday)

OPERATION HEADQUARTERS: Raytown Christian Church is where volunteers assemble the lunches each day to be delivered. Their address is 6108 Blue Ridge Boulevard.

HOW: School counselors are working with the volunteers by providing names of students possibly needing this service. District students will receive information in the mail.

DELIVERY AREAS: local multi-family housing units such as apartments, trailer parks and hotels in the Raytown School District.

VOLUNTEERS NEDED: For packing and deliveries everyday

INFORMATION OR TO MAKE DONATIONS: 816-353-1708

Lynda Shrader, Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education sums it up best by saying, "This is a program which our community can feel really good about. Children will not go hungry".

Thank God for these churches who have taken the initiative in dealing with this problem. Because of them, fewer students will be left hungry.

Sounds like a great idea. The school by me offers free breakfast to all students. I heard the food was nothing special but I don’t think they should complain since it’s free.
