For Father's Day, watching a movie with your dad can actually be a rare treat. Instead of going to the theater with a date or with a group of friends, spending your movie time with your father may or may not require that much preparation or surprise ideas for his special day, but it can still be such a worthwhile bonding endeavor that can even extend to a post-movie discussion while dining, walking around, or driving home. The movie options can range from the biggest blockbusters to art-house and documentary offerings that tend to ignite both the mind and the heart.
Option 1: Superhero Flick to Enjoy with Popcorn and Soda
If you and your dad prefer the type of movie indulgence where you can simply enjoy larger-than-life shots with popcorn and soda, "Green Lantern," the latest superhero movie coming out this Father's Day weekend, is something to consider. It is also possible that a number of fathers out there are actually fans of this DC Comics character. If so, all the more that you should actually treat him for a free superhero flick to watch this weekend. Based on the movie's trailer, it is something that moviegoers could simply sit back and enjoy blockbuster fun visuals and special effects.
Option 2: Sci-fi Thriller Exploring a Coming of Age Story Set in the 1970s
A suspense-filled movie like "Super 8" may bring that 1970s nostalgia to your dad, while you also have your own dose of coming of age reminiscing from the story. This quality blockbuster treat may even spark discourse or analysis after the movie, or it may simply lead to personal sharing of insights about the story, the period where it was set, how the Super 8 camera of yesteryear differs from the handycams today, or how your dad's own teenage years differ from the generations that came afterwards. This collaboration from filmmakers Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrams successfully brings motion picture magic back to its old school storytelling roots.
Option 3: Documentary Following the Life of a Dedicated Man
"Buck," a documentary film releasing this Father's Day weekend, can be an ideal option for a movie bonding treat with your dad, especially if you both prefer to watch something that is filled with emotions coming from a realistic setting --instead of the usual fictional stories seen in narrative movies. Featuring a real-life American cowboy whose passion for horseback leads him to travel long distances to help horses with people problems, this film offers a different kind of drama for its audience. It features a certain kind of animal-human relationship that eventually becomes a metaphor for the daily struggles of life for any man.
