Summer Music: 10 Songs for Lounging by the Swimming Pool

Music for Relaxing by the Pool

Sherri Thornhill
When the summer months hit, most of us are looking for some relief. What better relief from the heat than a dip in the swimming pool? If you plan on having a relaxing lounge by the pool or in the pool, the right music can go a long way to complete the experience. I've chosen 10 of my favorite pool lounging songs to share with you. Enjoy.

Uncle Kracker and Kid Rock-"Good To Be Me"

This is one of my favorite summer songs and while you are spending time by your swimming pool, this song will remind you of all that you have. Some of the lyrics paint the picture of the song, "...I got it all figured out, I got no worries that I'm worried about."

Arcade Fire-"The Suburbs"

Arcade Fire has gone from relatively unknown to big time in the music industry thanks to winning two Grammy Awards. "The Suburbs" is a song off their record with the same name. It has a relaxing melody that is perfect for lounging by the pool.

The Black Keys-"Tighten Up"

The Black Keys sing a lot of fast songs that are awesome, but this one is at a much slower and chilled out pace. Though the lyrics deal with love and childhood, the sound is like some hippie song from the 1960s. I love this song.

Adele-"Rolling in the Deep"

It took me awhile to get on the Adele bandwagon, but I'm on it now. She has an incredible voice which is rightly highlighted in "Rolling in the Deep". Put this song on your pool lounge playlist and fall in love with her voice just like so many have.

Sheryl Crow-"Soak up the Sun"

I met Sheryl Crow years ago, and found her to be three things; tiny, talented and really nice. "Soak up the Sun" is a fun summer song that is perfect for lounging by the pool. Put this Grammy winner on your playlist for hanging out by the pool this summer.

Don Henley-"The Boys of Summer"

This is one of my all time favorite summer songs, by the great Don Henley. There have been cover versions that were done well, but nothing beats the original. Float in your swimming pool with a cold drink, and let "The Boys of Summer" bring you back to easier times.

Jack Johnson-"Better Together"

I recently discovered Jack Johnson and his music, and I'm grateful that I did. This talented young man has soul in his songs, and they are all worth listening too. "Better Together" has this chorus, "Mmm, so much better when we're together. Yeh, we'll look at the stars when we're together. Well it's so much better when we're together. Yeh, it's so much better when we're together." So if you are pool lounging by the one you love, it's all the better.

Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat-"Lucky"

Two of my favorite singers collaborated in 2009 to make one terrific song called "Lucky." The voices of Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat were meant to sing together. The beat, the lyrics, and the voices are all perfect for a lazy summer afternoon at the swimming pool.

Norah Jones-"Sunrise"

This is a beautiful and once popular song by the talented Miss Norah Jones. Imagine you and the one you are into sitting hand in hand at the edge of the pool, listening to this beautiful song. Enjoy your summer and enjoy your love.

Ben Harper-"Fly One Time"

I'd heard his name but didn't know his music until recently. Like Jack Johnson, I am so happy to know all about his talent now! I love the suppleness of his voice joined with the creativity of his song writing. This guy and this song are meant to be on any summer playlist.

I will give a special mention to a summer classic: Jimmie Buffet's "Margaritaville." If you have room for song number 11 on your swimming pool playlist, this one should make the cut.
