Summer Plum Harvest Means Plum-Nut Bread

Delicious Way to Use Fresh, Frozen, or Canned Plums

Fern Fischer
When August arrives, so does the time for the plums to ripen. This recipe is excellent made with any type of plum. Red, black, or even the blue Stanley prune plums will bake nicely in this moist bread.

Plum-Nut Bread

1 cup butter
1 cups sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
4 eggs
3 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 cup sour cream
2 teaspoons grated orange peel
2 cups diced plums, unpeeled
1 cup chopped nuts

Cream butter and sugar; add vanilla. Add eggs one at a time, beating after each egg.

Sift together dry ingredients. Stir orange peel into sour cream. Alternately add dry ingredients and sour cream to creamed butter/sugar. Mix well.

Stir in plums and nuts. Divide batter into two greased and floured 9X5 loaf pans.

Bake 350 degrees for 50 - 55 minutes, or until bread tests done.

Cool 10 minutes and then remove from pans.

Cool completely before slicing.

This is very good with Cinnamon-Vanilla Yo-Cheese spread on it. See the Yo-cheese recipe here, and simply add cinnamon and vanilla to taste.

I've never had plum nut bread, so this is going in the recipe file for when I have plums around. Yummy!
