Spring and summer are fast approaching, and with this time of the year coming; many head off to the lake or tropical location for a nice family vacation. I know my family and I love being at the lake as often as possible during the summer. Many, however, are unaware of safety tips or maybe aren't so worried about accidents happening. It is always important to be aware and take heed of safety tips to protect your family.

The first tip that someone can do is simple. If you have someone in your family that does not know how to swim, it is important they take swimming lessons. This can be done at your local pool. Learning to swim can keep a person safe in and around the water. Also, if your family decides to go swimming, swim in supervised areas only. Make sure to obey all the rules and posted signs. Never disobey these rules because they are there for a reason.

A second tip to follow, when out on the water with your family, is to not mix alcohol and swimming. Drinking alcohol will impair your judgment. It also affects your balance and coordination. Drinking will also affect your swimming and diving skill, and it will reduce your body's ability to stay warm.

Third, be aware of your local weather. Pay attention to your surrounding weather conditions and forecasts. At the first indication of bad weather stop swimming.

Boating is another favorite family past time of the summer. It doesn't matter if you are the captain of the boat or just a passenger; everyone needs to follow guidelines to ensure everyone's safety.

The most important tip for boating is be aware of the weather. If sudden wind shifts occur or lightening flashes and choppy water are beginning, then this can be an indication that a storm is coming. Have a portable radio to keep check of your weather conditions. Second check your boat, equipment, boat balance, engine and fuel supply before leaving. Weather and a defective boat that wasn't checked properly, are the two main reasons people get stranded out on the open water.

If you are out boating it is important to bring extra gear with you that might be needed. Some of those items are batteries, flashlights, and a map of where you are, sun tan lotion, and a first aid kit. Make sure the ones that aren't waterproof are put into a waterproof container for safekeeping. You never know when your boat may break down and how long it will be before help arrives. Also, make sure someone in your family, who is not with you, knows your location in case something happens. This can make it easier for help to get to you.

Summer is a great time of year for families to come together and enjoy the open water. Following these tips can give you peace of mind and keep your family safe.
