Summer Sun Safety Tips

When summer rolls around many of us hit the beach or start spending much more time in the sunshine. Or we might have a summer gathering out in the backyard or on a porch deck for fun without any regard for the intense heat or the summer sun that is blasting down on our faces and body. As many may know the summer sun can damage our hair, skin, and even our eyes. Researchers found that too much sun exposure leads to dry skin, early wrinkles, and even cancer. Enjoy the summer sun and fun but use a few of the following tips to stay safe in the sun.

Moisturize - We've all heard this repeatedly before that skin needs moisture and the summer sun robs the skin of needed moisture. Always wear plenty of moisturizer on the face and exposed areas when out in the sun. Don't just rush out and buy the first moisturizer that you see on the shelves in the drugstore. Browse the shelves and select a moisturizer with a high oil content. The more oil in the product the more protection it offers the skin. The oil is much better at sealing in the moisture to the skin than those thinner products that are basically water. And one way to tell a moisturizer is basically water is to look at the ingredients. If the first ingredient is water then you can be sure it is a mostly water based product.

Sun screen/Sun blocks - Sun worshipers should take the time to apply a sun-screen or sun-block to their exposed skin before going outdoors. There are hundreds of sun-screen and sun-blocks on the market. So which one should you select? Search for a product with a high SPF. SPF is the Sun Protection Factor. The higher the SPF the more protection for the skin. Researchers suggest using a product with a SPF 30 or higher.

Hair Protection - Too much sun exposure causes hair to dry out and bake. Cover up the hair to avoid damage and drying out the hair. Wear a cap, large brim hat, or even a scarf to protect the hair at peak sun hours.

More Sun Protection Tips

Long Sleeves - Wear long sleeves to protect sensitive skin when outdoors.

Eyes - Always wear a good pair of sunglasses with high UV (Ultra-Violet) to protect eyes from sun exposure. Wear contacts that offer UV protection.

Exposure - Avoid too much sun during peak areas between 10 and 3 daily.

Hydration - Many moisturize the skin once and go about their business. It is recommended to moisturize skin throughout the day to keep it well nourished and hydrated.

Dehydration- Most are already dehydrated by the time they feel thirsty. Always drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration.
