As summer time approaches many college students are preparing for finals and looking forward to summer break. But there are many programs that a student can take during the summer to further their education and get a head start on the fall semester. This year, like many years past, Los Angeles City College is offering summer classes for credit or transfer credit upon completion. In addition, the college is also offering "Community Services" which are classes designed to further your career, business skills, computer and internet skills, cooking, consumer education, and arts. These classes do not offer credits but many do come with a certificate of completion and are available to all members of the community. The summer classes available from the college vary and range from Math to Foreign Languages, Business to Law, and Theater to Psychology (basically something for everyone!).

These classes offer university transfer credits, a useful aspect especially for students who are coming home from their prospective colleges and universities for the summer. Students may take the classes over the summer and transfer the credits back to their schools at the end of the summer. This is a cheap alternative to the pricey summer programs offered at four year colleges and universities.

An added incentive to an already enticing summer program is the fact that some of the courses offer an eight day class option. This means that a student could finish up an entire class, obtain the credit and learn the material in just eight days! The only down fall to this type of course option is that each class is six hours long and the student must attend the class from Sunday to Saturday, which does not provide the student with much of a break through out the week. In addition, the class moves at a rapid pace, so it does take some hard work to keep up and maintain a good grade in the class. Los Angeles City College also offers financial aid for students who demonstrate a need for it and have a few different ways to register for the summer session and courses, including online registration, enrollment by the telephone, or walk-in registration.

It is important to note that many cities have their own community colleges so if you do not live in the Los Angeles area there may be summer programs in place at a community college near you. Whether you are a current college student working towards a degree or just someone looking to expand their education, summer programs, in whatever city you live in, have a lot to offer and can really help out when it comes to cost and time.
