Here are some ways you can save money on your next trip to Japan!
What To See:
- City, City, City. Japan is known for its bustling cities. Whether it's Tokyo or Kyoto, you will witness cities that never sleep. When it comes to Tokyo - think an extremely friendly New York City. You will see warm colors at every corner, with commerce at the heart of the city. The best part is, it doesn't cost anything to take a stroll down the city!
- Yakushima. The ancient city. You will see ancient cedars and relax in hot springs. A very inexpensive location!
- Kyoto. The home of beautiful shrines, temples, and gardens. Once again, it is very different from anything you will ever see anywhere in the world! Also very inexpensive!
- Takayama. This is the spot you want to be at if you enjoy mountains - with a Japanese twist. The resorts are quite inexpensive, but you will come across hotels outside the city limit that aren't too expensive.
What To Eat:
- You have to eat authentic sushi at least once. Try it at a fancy restaurant once, and then try it again at a smaller, less expensive. Most people will like the less expensive counterpart since it is much more authentic. Trust me - just because it costs you more doesn't make it better!
- Try going to places outside the city. The restaurants within the cities are aimed toward the general public - and are expensive. Since transportation is inexpensive, you can go a little bit outside the city and have a great dinner - for half the cost!
Where to Stay:
- Remember, you will want to spend more time outside the hotel then within! Just look for a hotel outside city limits since it'll be less expensive.
- I recommend looking for a hotel and booking for more than one night. You will be able to bargain for a lower rate!
Visiting Japan is exciting and can be expensive. Hope these tips will help you save money on your next vacation!

Another way to save money is to take a Japanese SIM and phone so that you're not paying expensive roaming rates.
I work for a company called Cellhire that will rent a Japanese phone for $19 a week which provides free incoming calls and calls back to the US at $1.49.
