Summer Vacation Ideas: Camping in Northeast Wisconsin

Quenton Kappids
If you are looking for a relaxing getaway for this summer or fall, then a camping trip to Northeastern Wisconsin may be for you. Here are the three best campgrounds I have found in the area, based on my personal experience.

1. Peninsula State Park, Door County

This is a great campground for families or people of all ages. There are many activities to participate in, no matter the season. There are seven miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, filled with beaches and offering beautiful views of the sunset. Boating and volleyball are just a couple of the activities that are available on the shoreline. The park also has 20 miles of hiking trails and 10 miles of biking trails. There are many small loops of varying difficulties that make up the hiking trails, offering fun recreation for people of all experience levels.

The park also includes an 18-hole golf course including a 69 yard hole down a 50-foot cliff. The course if open from May to mid-October. Carts and pull-carts are available for rent.

Eagle Tower is a 75 foot observation tower seated atop a 180-foot limestone bluff. It offers great views of the park, Green Bay Islands, and the Lake Michigan shoreline.

2. Harbour Village Resort, Sturgeon Bay

The highlight of this campground is the outdoor water park. Featuring two 350-foot waterslides, a 6000 square foot swimming pool, a kiddie pool, and a Jacuzzi, the water park is fun for everyone.

The campground also features a mini golf course, a game room, volleyball and basketball courts, and a nature trail. There are many activities organized by the campground for the residents.

The proximity to the tourism of the Door County area makes Harbour Village a great campground for those who do not wish to camp right in the hustle and bustle of Door County.

3. Point Beach State Forest, Two Rivers

This is a very quiet campground, when compared to the first two. It is within driving or biking distance of the small town of Two Rivers, or Manitowoc. There is a bike trail connecting the campground to both of these cities. Both Two Rivers and Manitowoc offer many attractions and activities.

The campground has 13 miles of hiking/biking trails that are also available for skiing/snowshoeing in winter. The six miles of Lake Michigan shoreline are filled with beaches and sand dunes. A short walk on the trails can bring you to Port Sandy Bay restaurant, which offers great pizza, a bar, and a large game room.
