Catching Walleye During the Summer Months

Here are some summer walleye fishing tips that anglers can use to catch more walleye through the summer months. Summer is not just a time for catching bass and catfish, but summer can be productive for walleye and other species of game fish. Though not as active and certainly not as shallow as during the milder days of spring and fall, walleye can still be caught even on those hot and bright summer days.

Summer Walleye Fishing Tips - Go Deep

The simplest tips for fishing for walleyes during the summer is to fish deep. Bottom lures and baits and deep running crankbaits are ideal during the summer months when the walleye are seeking cooler water and avoiding the bright sunlight. Use maps or depth finders to look for channels in lakes where the deepest water will be.

Summer Walleye Fishing Tips - Early and Late

Early and late day fishing is almost always best, but this is especially true for summer walleye. Walleye avoid warm water and bright water making these the best times of day to catch them feeding in the shallows, creek mouths, and other locations. Night fishing is another option for catching walleye during the summer.

Summer Walleye Fishing Tips - Fish on Windy Days

A light summer breeze will help to make waves on the water which helps to reduce the amount of sunlight which penetrates the surface. A breeze may also help to reduce water temperatures somewhat. Wind also helps to knock insects and other food sources into the water and this might help to trigger a strike.

Summer Walleye Fishing Tips - Fish Overcast Days

Overcast days also reduce light and heat in the water which always helps the walleye fishing. Fishing before a rain is often a productive time regardless of species targeted.

Summer Walleye Fishing Tips - Hit the Cover

Fishing near weeds and other aquatic vegetation can be productive for summer time walleye. Vegetation helps to provide shade, introduce oxygen to the water, and provides cover for baitfish. This makes vegetation a great place to find a walleye that is willing to strike.

Summer Walleye Fishing Tips - Be Patient

While the muskie is referred to as the fish of 10,000 casts, summer time walleye can be difficult to get to strike as well. Cast a few more times than usual into likely areas as summer walleye might not want to expend a lot of energy and need to be coaxed into biting.
