Summer Water Safety Tips

Summer time is a great time to get out and take pleasure in being out doors. The call of the water is strong during the summer. Getting out and swimming, boating and riding of water equipment is some of the great things we can do out on the water this summer. But while the water offers so much that we can enjoy, it also offers many dangers that we need to be aware of and safety needs to stay a top priority.

Always make sure to have some one with you when you swim. We all have heard about never swimming alone. Well make sure this summer that we all take this word of warning into account. But there is more to water safety than just making sure that we have someone with us when we swim.

It is easy to get into having a good time out on the water and sometimes our attention gets drawn away from our children. Life jackets can be a life saver for a child when out on the water. Life jackets are also encumber some and can get in the way. So what should parents do? My advice is to purchase a swim suit for your child that has a built in life jacket. I use these on my children and have found them to be better than a life jacket, as far as the way they feel when worn by my children. I picked ours up at Wal-mart for around $15. Also unlike life jackets my children can not slip them off while I am distracted.

When it comes to boating , we really need to be careful and observant of the waters and people around us. Never mix alcohol and boating together. This is a recipe for disaster. It is just as dangerous to operate a boat while drinking as it is to drive a car while drinking. So if you must drink while out on the water, make sure to have someone else operate the boat who is not drinking.

On top of not operating the boat while not drinking, keep in mind that while consuming alcohol you are putting yourself at risk of a dehydrating out in the heat. This can prove to be fatal. So play it safe when drinking in the heat.

A poplar but dangerous thing that I have seen people do when out swimming is to jump of the cliff into the water. So many people find this activity to be fun. When out jumping of the cliffs into the water, no one takes into relation the amount of people who have suffered serious injuries from this type of activity. Not to mention that aside from serious injuries, people have drown doing this. So keep in mind that despite the fact that this looks cool and fun, it is very dangerous.

Snakes can also pose a problem for swimmers. The heat attracts the snakes to the water just as it does people. So when swimming make sure to always be aware of banks of the swimming area for snakes. If you see a snake near the water or in the water, make sure to alert the other swimmers so that everyone can get safely out of the water. Snake bites can really place a damper on the fun everyone is having. Make sure also that before going off to swim you understand what to do in case of a snake bite. Sometimes we do not always have time to reach a medical facility before action is needed.

Taking precautions and playing it safe when out on the water does not mean that we can not have fun. What it does mean those is that we just need to go out and have good clean fun. When we don't take precautions the fun is usually ended quick due to a tragedy.

Very important issue. My Mom lives on a private lake and they've seen their share of deaths in the community.
