Summer Weekend Getaway: Deer Valley Ranch in Nathrop, Colorado

In the majestic Rocky Mountains near Nathrop, Colorado is the Deer Valley Ranch a Christian Family Dude Ranch and Guest Ranch. The same family has owned and operated the ranch since 1954. It is a great Christian atmosphere for a weekend trip or vacation.

At the Deer Valley Ranch you are not just a guest your are family. There are activities for everyone young and old. There is hiking, horseback riding, fly-fishing, white-water rafting, tennis, or golf. You can also just relax by the hot springs swimming pool, the large deck at the lodge or your own deck at your cabin.

The ranch is located in the Collegiate Peaks Fourteener Range. This gives you views of Mt Antero in the front and Mt. Princeton in the back. The ranch is actually located at the base of the spectacular 1,000 ft Chalk Cliffs. The staff of 50 is there to make sure your family ahs a safe and fun time.

Your lodging choices are a private room in the mountain resort or in one of the one to four bedroom vacation cabins, which has the warmth of a small home. Each lodge room has a private bathroom and one or two beds. The lodge rooms are great for couples or a family of three.

The vacation cabins have fully-equipped kitchens, living rooms and dining rooms. They also all have a fireplace and deck with a great view. No two cabins are the same. The cabins are great for families or a group of friends. They are decorated in western décor to fit the area.

Meals at Deer Valley Ranch include their Mexican buffet lunches and steak cookouts. There are also a Wrangler's breakfast and a lunch cookout including their famous Cowboy Cookies. There are many homemade breads, deserts, special western buffets. There are also plenty of healthy choices like fresh vegetables and fruits. The kitchen staff will accommodate any special diet if notified before arrival.

Whether you are an experienced horseback rider or a beginner, they have a horse for you. They have a Wranglers breakfast ride early in the morning. You ride for a while then you enjoy scrambled eggs and bacon cooked over an open fire with coffee in a tin cup. While you enjoy breakfast, you have a scenic view of the Chalk Cliffs and Mt. Princeton.

The Steak Dinner Ride takes you to the top of a scenic ridge where your choice of steak or chicken is cooked over an open fire. The High Country Ride is where your horse is taken by trailer to the 10,000 elevation and then you ride back down the mountain. You stop halfway down to eat a special packed lunch.

The ranch is located in beautiful mountain country where the hiking is great. The hikes range from a one-hour hike before breakfast or an all day hike. The view from the peaks shows you why it is called God's country.

There is plenty of fishing in the clear rocky streams. You can fly-fish for trout or go to the local lake stocked for the whole family. Chalk Creek is on the ranch and the Arkansas River is only six miles away.

There are plenty of programs for children and teens. The activity directors are trained in first aid for safety. There are sports, arts and crafts, and games for all ages.
