Summer's End 2011

Melissa Lawson
"The hottest on record",
the old ones say.
Desert-like drought,
no rain to play.
The ground cracks open,
the lake dries up.
The cranes flew away,
no nests for the ducks.
"The driest we've seen",
say the old ones again.
All faces show worry,
the farmers feel pain.
Wildfires rage around me,
destroying the trees.
Homes have been lost,
fires swirl in the breeze.
Lives have been lost,
bringing more pain.
Yet they say it continues,
there won't be enough rain.
Summer has ended,
school back in session.
The trees changing colors,
season continues progression.
The air turning cooler,
but the land is still dry.
The temperature drops,
like our water supply.
We need the rain,
to do more than make mud.
Bring on the rain,
from the places that flood.

How gladly I would have shared it with you. (You're linked in the poison ivy article at my blog today.)

So sad this time of year, but many need the rain as well as suffer from it, you capture that poignancy:)
