Summer's Gifts

Mary Martin

The gifts of summer are many

Though few recognize the graces

Which abound during these days so few.

Days that are as hot as the color of the bright orange lily

So bright and beautiful

Demand that we pause.

Rest we must or wilt like a flower

In drought.

Summer gives us cause to rest.

Nights as cool as the dense green fern

Renew our body, spirit and mind

With rest so welcome.

So each morn we hit the hot pavement

Busy with work, travel and play

No thought of the toll of the sun.

Exhausted we revive

Under the starry, starry sky

Another summer day to receive.

I often think of summer as orange. That's what drew me to this poem. Great imagery!

Mary this is delightful, I adore your poetry it is so beautifully real, comparing the heat with the orange lily and the cool of night with the fern, just masterfully done, great poem, thank you!
