So much sunlight
To lighten the earth
and my heart.
I woke early this morning
To the noisy, yet welcoming
sound of the cardinal at my feeder.
The aroma of coffee
stirred in my nostrils.
I poured hazelnut bliss
into my favorite red cup.
Outside on my deck I noticed
drops of dew making the
green grass dazzle in the
early sunlight.
Puff, the neighborhood cat
strolled by and sat down
at my feet. She seemed to be
watching the entire neighborhood
as she turned her head side to side
on this beginning of the longest
day of this year.
i took another sip of coffee and
opened the morning paper
to read what my favorite
columnist had to say today.
A strong scent of the
purple petunias in the pot beside me
filled the nearby air. A hummingbird
decided to sip some nectar for a great
petunia breakfast.
The sun is higher in the summer sky now.
I folded the unread paper and folded my hands.
God be with us all today, I prayed.
Just then, the phone rang. She's here!
At 6:01 Bettie Ann was born. She's tiny -
only 6 lbs., but the doctor says she's fine.
Mom, I just want to tell everyone about her.
Mom, we're all fine!
I'll get my ticket and be there right away.
The dew was gone now. The sun's rays
shone through the tree tops.
I rinsed my cup and placed it in the dishwasher.
Once again, a small part of me will
walk on this earth.
She will, we hope, celebrate many happy birthdays
on this, the longest day of the year.
So much sunlight
will lighten her earth
and her heart.

June 21 is the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. It seems we lose so much sunshine and potential for feeling great if that day is cloudy and rainy.
