Summertime Offers Unexpected Outdoor Fitness Ideas

Warm weather offers all sorts of outdoor activities with friends or family. Hanging out with your favorite group of people is often surrounded by outdoor barbecues and lounging at the pool, but there are ways to throw fitness in the mix. For some, exercising leaves a bad taste in their mouth, but you don't have to do formal exercises to incorporate fitness into your activities.

Tug-of-war

If you're at a larger gathering, there's nothing like a game of tug-of-war to challenge the group's athletic prowess. A game of tug-of-war pits two groups of people against each other, while pulling a rope. It's a test of strength and can be played in several ways with your group. You can play tug-of-war as a game of women against men, children against adults, kids against kids and etc.

Potato sack races

Although it's been ages since I've seen a potato sack race, it's still a fun activity to incorporate into your outdoor activities. Whether you're with a large group or with your kids, potato sack races will really add oomph to your day. If you can't find potato sacks, use old pillow cases that you're not concerned about ruining.

Snorkeling

Snorkeling is a way to enjoy the water and the underwater sights if you're spending summer in a tropical location. Swim fins, a diving mask and a snorkel are all that's needed, unlike scuba diving, which is more complicated. A wetsuit may be needed if you are swimming in cooler waters. Do be careful if you plan to snorkel in an area with boats or other small water crafts. You may not be seen, which can cause a collision.

Badminton

Play a game of badminton for endurance and cardiovascular exercise. If you don't have a net, it's not a big deal. The racket and shuttlecock, or shuttle, are portable and lightweight and can be played anywhere. All you need are comfortable sneakers and enough space to run and swing the racket.

Hula Hooping

Hula hooping is more than a game for kids, so spend time at the park or in the yard hula hooping. The hoops are inexpensive and come in a variation of sizes to accommodate anyone. There are several games that can be played with your hula hoop such as hoop toss, thread the needle, horse and buggy and hoopster. Add contests such as the longest time hooped or hula hooping with the most hoops to keep things interesting.
