Summitt Fans Urge Others to Show Support by Wearing Orange

Fan are urging others to show their support for Pat Summitt by wearing orange on Friday, August 26, 2011. The University of Tennessee Lady Vols basketball coach recently revealed that she has early onset dementia. Despite the diagnosis the lady has no plans to step down.


Tenacity like this is why she is hailed as a champion of women's basketball. Her accomplishments are the stuff of legend. The record for Pat Summitt includes 1,037 wins against just 196 losses. She has eight NCAA Championships under her belt and 29 combined Southeastern Conference titles.


A troubling set of symptoms led her to seek answers from Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. The stunning diagnosis seemed to come out of the nowhere. Word of the diagnosis has rocked the town of Knoxville, Tennessee where Pat Summitt is known for her coaching and her charity work. The reaction from coaches and others across the country has been immediate.


With a few exceptions, the reaction by others has been supportive. Fans immediately mobilized to show their support for the icon of women's basketball. Messages have poured in and Facebook pages have been set up.


One such page asks for people to wear orange in support of Pat Summitt on Friday, August 26, 2011. It went from 300 invitations to over 36,000 'likes' almost overnight. Messages calling the UT Lady Vols coach 'an inspiring hero' and 'we love you' are scattered throughout the page.


The message from the creator of the Facebook page says 'Lets show her we are honored to to be a Lady Vol and Pat Head Summit fan.' Support is swift, enthusiastic and going viral. People from all over the world have posted that they will be sporting the color orange in support of the UT Lady Vols coach.


Knoxville based Petro's Chili and Chips has gotten into the act. Pat Summitt supporters who wear orange on Friday, August 26 can receive a free iced tea if they mention 'Wear Orange' Customers should refer to this tweet for information.

Pat Summitt has inspired people around the globe to reach for their dreams. This hasn't only been accomplished on the court but through her many charitable works. Pat Summitt deserves to have the support of her fans.
