Sun Microsystems: The Talent Pool

Anonymous
Some may say that twenty-five years is not much time. However, few would dare say so regard Sun MicroSystems. This company is one that seems to attract the best and brightest of the job pool. Among these are both employees who worked for Sun MicroSystems for many years as well as those who only worked there for a brief period of time. The one thing they both have in common, however, is greatness.

The three people who built this company from the ground up are of interest as well. The first, Andy Bechtolsheim, was still doing postgraduate work when he put together what became the company's first UNIX station. The other two, Vinod Khosla and Scott McNealy, became his partners in 1982 and, just like that, Sun MicroSystems was born.

Even excluding Sun MicroSystems, these businesspeople went on to do great things. When 1995 rolled around, Bechtolsheim created another company called Granite Systems. This company was purchased by Cisco Systems. Earlier, in 1985, Vinod Khosla became a partner in a separate business. Serving the role of engineer of BSD UNIX, Bill Joy was the last one remaining. However, in 2003, he too called it quits. The company became increasingly successful thanks to Chief Executive Officer Scott McNeally who took over said position in 1984. For more than two decade he kept the company successful until giving up the reins to a man named Jonathon Schwartz in 2004.

Some say that Google is one of the most successful companies today. Well, the CEO of Google also worked at Sun. NVIDIA is one of the most successful graphic card companies. Its founders had had also worked at Sun. The creator of XML, Jon Bosak, was also a member of the Sun MicroSystem's talent pool. In looking at this, you can see the Sun MicroSystems is having a great effect on the technology community even when many of the advancements are not being credited to Sun MicroSystems. When Google heads up a great innovation, remember that it Research Director, Chief Financial Officer and, as previously mentioned, Chief Executive Officer, are all Sun MicroSystem's alum.

When Sun MicroSystems buys up other companies, they still tend to find talented people. Many individuals who are important in the computer world have come to be involved with Sun. MySQL AB' former Chief Executive Officer, for example, is, through a buyout, a current employee at Sun MicroSystems

If you know about Sun MicroSystem's talent pool, you know the history of computer science. Of course, after looking at Sun's record, one would not be surprised by the caliber people the company attracts. They have been leaders of the community for a very long time.
