Sun Protection for Babies

The summer can be a fun time of year but also a dangerous time for your little ones. Children and babies have
much thinner skin than adults and therfore tend to burn more easily in the sun. Pediatricians recommend
children should use sunscreen at all times, even for short trips outside, to guard against the suns damaging
rays.

Ideally you should choose a product that provides an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 15. The product should be chemical free and contain either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Be sure to always check the expiration
date as sunscreen tends to lose its effectiveness.

There are many great, all natural products available to provide your baby with adequate protection. California Baby offers a long line of natural products such as their No Fragrance SPF 30 Lotion. It is very gentle and can even be used on the face. It contains no chemicals and is PABA free. The lotion retains its effectiveness even after 80 minutes of water play. The main ingredient is pediatrician recommended titanium dioxide.

Bull Frog Kids Marathon Mist contains an SPF of 36 and is also waterproof. It goes on in a clear mist and dries almost immediately, providing quick, even coverage with no greasy feel.

Another great spray-on sunscreen is KINeSYS Kids SPF 30. It is non-irritating, hypoallergenic and fragrance free. KINeSYS is free of oils, alcohol and PABA. It dries quickly so your little one is ready to play.

If youare on the go often, Baby Blanket SunBlankie Towelettes are just what you need. They contain an SPF of 45 and are conveniently packaged individually. The Towelettes are non-stinging, hypoallergenic and offer water
resistant protection. All you need to do is drop a couple in the diaper bag and you are ready for any outdoor
activity.

In my opinion, one of the best sunscreens is Coppertone Kids Continuous Spray with and SPF of 50. I have a two year old who has a very fair complexion and loves to play outside. We live in South Texas and the sun
is very hot on a daily basis so protecting her is important to me. Coppertone offers a clear, no-rub spray that
dries quickly so she is ready to go. It is also waterproof so she is protected in the pool. Sometimes she is very
anxious to be moving and Coppertone evens sprays upside down or from whatever angle I can manage to get.
The top of the can also has a twist & lock cap so I don't have to worry about accidents.
Which one of these products you choose to protect you little angels is up to you, but be sure they are protected at all times.
