At times, people assume that if children have skin that tans rather than burns, those kids don't need sun protection. It is also sometimes assumed that if the sun is out, but the temperature is not really that hot, sun protection isn't needed. Neither of those statements are true
Those who live in hot climates, such as certain parts of Texas, will need even more protection, but all children need protection from the sun, regardless of the temperature outside or their skin tone. According to SunGrubbies, most harmful exposure to sun rays occurs by the age of 18, before the adult life begins. Too much sun exposure can lead to skin cancer and other harmful problems. Sun protection clothing is designed specifically to block harmful rays. Much like sunscreen, there can be SPF and UPF ratings on sun-protection clothing for children. Some of the protective kids clothing also has special features, such as air vents in the underarm area, roll-up collars to protect the neck, and even cuffs with hand flaps that are designed to be retractable.
Many sun protection items are made with tightly-woven fabric and are made from synthetic fibers, such as cotton, nylon, and polyester. Nylon is the most popular fiber used in sun protection clothing for kids. Some are treated with UV protection and some are not. Be careful what you choose and make sure the UV protection is clearly stated on the product.

Very helpful. Thanks!
Very useful tips.
I wish I would have read your article when I was looking for a UPF hat, but fortunately I found Coolibar through lots of research on the Internet. They're a wonderful company; glad you mentioned them in your article. This information is essential for all parents and people with sensitive/fair skin like moi.
Actually I'm against sunblock entirely. It's deadly to use. This idea is wonderful. We all NEED exposure to the sun!! We're FROM this planet. I sent this to my ex too.
Great article with important info!
Wonderful suggestions. I've long looked at clothing as additional protection against the sun because in spite of my Native American heritage, I inherited my Caucasian mother's overly sensitive skin.
I wish I'd known about these four years ago when I lived in TX. Thanks for the excellent info!
yep, hits home with two little ones in houston texas it's so hard to keep them protected from the sun and cool and comfortable.
I have no wee ones at home any more so I'm out of the loop on new children's products. Having read the article I think I would prefer the natural protection of the tightly woven fabrics over any kind of treated fabric - especially for very young children.
