Sun Sign Astrology---Your Career Guide

Crystal Ball: Your Sun Sign Career Guide

When most of us think of astrology today, it is the sun sign predictions in the daily newspaper that spring to mind first. But sun sign astrology is actually a recent development. While daily predictions go as far back as the Ancient Egyptians (evidenced by the Cairo Calendar), and newspapers have carried astrological predictions since the days of William Lilly (17th century), it is not until 1930 that we get the form of astrology that we are familiar with today.

It was Richard Harold Naylor, better known as R. H. Naylor, who invented the sun sign astrology of today. In August 1930, he was working as an assistant to Cheiro, the best known astrologer of the day. The Sunday Express, a British newspaper, wanted a piece about the astrological prospects of newly born Princess Margaret. Cheiro was too busy to do it, so R. H. Naylor wrote the piece instead.

The readers of the Sunday Express were enthusiastic about the piece, so Naylor was asked to write some more pieces for them. At this point, Naylor ended up accomplishing what can only be described as winning the astrologer's lottery. He wrote that British aircraft might be in danger; the day that the issue hit the newsstands, the airship R-101 crashed. Naylor was now the most famous astrologer in the world.

Naylor faced the issue of how to involve readers in his column. He needed a simplified version of astrology. Though a process of trial and error, he invented sun sign astrology. By addressing his predictions towards the sign that the reader's natal sun was in, easily determined by birth date, he could make predictions that applied to the masses. From there, sun sign astrology spread into other newspapers and into books as other astrologers adapted his technique.

Yet one must admit that sun sign astrology has a major flaw. One does not need a cracked crystal ball or an introductory course in statistics to spot the flaw. It is simply ridiculous to say that everyone born in a given month is going to have a certain type of luck on a given day or exhibit the same character traits.

For instance, take the idea that your sun sign determines your career. If such a technique was really applicable, it would be easy to get rid of all the lawyers and politicians. Considering that we still knee deep in lawyers and politicians, I think it is safe to say that any career guide based on your sun sign is merely suggestive.

Aries (March 21 to April 20): The careers favored by the sun sign of Aries are all about heat, literally and figuratively. Any career involving physical activity or danger appeals to the adventurous native of Aries, including the military and firefighting. Physical therapists are also under the rule of this sign. Professions involving the head can also draw Aries to them, such as brain surgeons, hairdressers and jewelers.

Taurus (April 21 to May 21): The natives of Taurus are concerned with the finer things of life, and their careers mirror this interest. Bankers and financiers fall under the influence of Taurus. Architecture is also a field that Taurus thrives in. And what good would wealth be without the arts? Actors, artists, musicians and dancers are all under the influence of Taurus.

Gemini (May 22 to June 21): The careers ruled by Gemini are about communication and the exchange of information. Writers, broadcasters and editors are under the dominion of Gemini, as are web designers, bloggers, and computer programmers. Teachers and librarians are ruled by this sun sign. Those who work in the transportation fields and in accounting are also under the rulership of Gemini.

Cancer (June 22 to July 22): The careers of Cancer tend to be concerned with nurturing others. Agriculture and fishermen are under this sign's influence, as well as they who process food, such as bakers and chefs. Cancer is also drawn to careers dealing with homes, including plumbing and real estate agents. Nurses and hotel management are good choices for this sun sign. Natives of Cancer will also prove to be the stars of the new Green Energy economy.

Leo (July 23 to August 22): Leos seek to be stars, and not only of movies and sporting events. What Leo wants is the excitement that comes from being the center of attention. Therefore, Leos can be found working in all areas of entertainment, either as stars or as the managers of stars. Government officials, venture capitalists and upper management positions also appeal to Leos. In the field of medicine, Leos end up being heart specialists.

Virgo (August 23 to September 22): Given Virgo's attention to detail and organizational abilities, one almost expects to find them all working for the government or in middle management; but there are plenty of other fields where attention to detail is vital including science and medicine. Virgo's traits also lend themselves to becoming movie critics, efficiency experts, technical writers and illustrators.

Libra (September 23 to October 22): Libras believe in fairness and beauty. In the field of law, they tend to become lawyers specializing in trials, contracts or divorces. Arbitration, union organizing and diplomacy are also in the dominion of Libra. Outside of the field of law, Libras thrive as florists, social planners and fashion designers.

Scorpio (October 23 to November 21): The careers of those born under the sun sign of Scorpio center around fertility, death and toxins. Fertility doctors are as likely to be Scorpios as are coroners and undertakers. Life insurance salesmen, tax collectors and detectives fall under this sign's influence, as do chemists, researchers and nuclear scientists.

Sagittarius (November 22 to December 21): The careers of Sagittarius are concerned with bridging great distances: physical, temporal, or spiritual. Professional students, lawyers and judges, and the clergy are influenced by Sagittarius. Executives involved with advertising and international commerce are under this sign also. Sagittarius' energies also help in the writing of textbooks, philosophic, scientific and religious texts.

Capricorn (December 22 to January 19): The symbolic animal of Capricorn is a creature that is half goat, half fish. The careers that Capricorns gravitate towards mirror this image; they tend to involve hard to reach places. Repair men, security guards and politicians are all Capricorn influenced careers. In the field of science, Capricorns end up being cryogenic researchers and archaeologists. Capricorn's energies also lend themselves to becoming successful eBay sellers.

Aquarius (January 20 to February 18): Aquarius' energies flow towards careers involving electricity, genetics and the power of the human mind. Electrical engineers, medical scan technicians and psychologists are all careers that Aquarius natives enjoy. They can also prosper organizing cooperative and humanitarian movements. Natives of Aquarius have also found work as faith healers.

Pisces (February 19 to March 20): Seedy and dark can describe the careers ruled by the sun sign Pisces. Dancers, bartenders, brewers are careers that partake of the energies of Pisces. Drug developers, the staffs of hospitals and prisons also fall under the sign of Pisces. Occult writers, private investigators and swindlers can also come from the ranks of Pisces. The native of Pisces may want to consider joining a secret society for help with their career.
